Lindsay Clancy Has to Prove the Impossible to Get Out

The release standard sounds simple: show the court you're no longer mentally ill or dangerous. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to explain why, for Lindsay Clancy, that sentence might as well be written in stone.

Consider the bind. Her defense told the jury she has bipolar disorder — a lifelong condition — complicated by a postpartum psychotic break. If that account wins her the verdict, it becomes the official story of her mind, and it's a story with no ending. You manage bipolar disorder. You don't cure it. Every future release hearing starts from a diagnosis that, by definition, is still there. Shavaun lays out how psychiatric patients navigate that paradox, how rarely the system lets go of cases this notorious, and what the years of trying do to a person.
