Episode 137: Oak Island — The Money Pit and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History

In 1795, on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia, a teenage boy named Daniel McGinnis noticed a depression in the ground beneath an old oak tree. He and two friends began digging. At ten feet, they found a layer of wooden planks. At twenty feet, another. At thirty feet, another. They stopped. They came back with help. They kept digging. At ninety feet, they allegedly found a stone inscribed with a cipher that, when decoded, read "forty feet below, two million pounds lie buried." Below ninety feet, the pit flooded — apparently through an ingeniously constructed system of tidal channels that made further excavation nearly impossible. That was 1803. The treasure hunt on Oak Island has continued, with varying levels of intensity and investment, for over two centuries. Six people have died in the search. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent. And whatever is at the bottom of the Money Pit — if anything — has not yet been recovered.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine Oak Island — the documented history of the excavations, the theories about what might be buried there, and what two hundred years of failed treasure hunting actually tells us about the relationship between mystery and obsession.

The theories about what is buried on Oak Island are numerous and creative. The most popular holds that it is pirate treasure — specifically the treasure of Captain Kidd, who was active in the North Atlantic in the late seventeenth century and who reputedly buried significant plunder before his capture and execution in 1701. Others have proposed that it contains the original Shakespearean manuscripts — evidence that Francis Bacon wrote the plays — buried in a lead-lined vault to prove the authorship at some later date. Some theorise that it contains the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant, transported to the New World by the Knights Templar through a connection to the Sinclair family of Scotland. Others have proposed Marie Antoinette's jewels, Spanish colonial gold, or Inca treasure transported north.

The physical reality of Oak Island is complicated by the fact that much of what has been "found" over the centuries is of questionable provenance. The stone with the cipher inscription — the most dramatic single piece of evidence — disappeared in the nineteenth century and is known only through transcriptions whose accuracy cannot be verified. Carbon dating of wooden platforms found during excavations has suggested medieval dates, which would be genuinely anomalous. Spanish copper coins, a piece of sheepskin parchment, and fragments of gold chain have been reported at various depths, though the chain of custody for these artefacts is not always reliable.
