The irony is striking. Hezekiah had just experienced God's miraculous deliverance from Assyria, yet he begins placing confidence in the splendour of his kingdom. The very blessings God gave him become objects through which his pride is revealed.

Hezekiah's response to Isaiah is also unsettling. He acknowledges that the word of the Lord is good, but then thinks there will at least be peace and security during his own lifetime. His response exposes the temptation to prioritise immediate comfort over the wellbeing of future generations.
