Did Scientists Just Detect Dark Matter?

Scientists have spent decades searching for something they believe makes up roughly 85% of the matter in the universe, even though nobody has directly identified what it is.

Dark matter.

Now, nearly a mile beneath South Dakota, the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment has detected one strange particle interaction that researchers are having a difficult time explaining.

So... did we finally find dark matter?

Not exactly.

In this episode of the TTT Podcast, Beard Laws and Luther open the file on one of the biggest unanswered questions in modern physics. We break down what dark matter actually is, how scientists know something invisible appears to be shaping galaxies, what gravitational lensing tells us, and why researchers built an enormous detector deep underground filled with ultra-pure liquid xenon.

Then we investigate the new LZ result: one unusual event consistent with a high-energy nuclear recoil in a region where known background events are expected to be extremely rare.

Scientists aren't calling it dark matter.

But they aren't comfortably explaining it away, either.

Maybe this event eventually becomes nothing more than an interesting anomaly.
