Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi on the High-Stakes Race to Meet Energy Demand without Russian Gas

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi on the High-Stakes Race to Meet Energy Demand without Russian Gas 13 Jan 2023 --- Claudio Descalzi is CEO of the Italian energy giant Eni. As Russia’s assault on Ukraine roils European energy markets, companies like his are hustling to keep up with demand. Descalzi says the war (along with Covid) exposed how inelastic the demand for energy is: consumers and heavy industry need fuel whether there’s a war (or pandemic) on or not. Getting it to them while simultaneously exploring more sustainable resources is the challenge facing huge suppliers like his. Claudio joined the company in 1981 as an oil and gas field engineer, and over the years has developed a truly global perspective on the business, having served as director of the company's Congo and Nigeria operations, and as Executive Vice President for Africa, Middle East, and China. Descalzi sat down with HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius for our video series “The New World of Work” to discuss: • The decades-long effort to transform an oil and gas company into a clean energy company. • Energy security and competition in a growingly crowded world where more people want better lives. • What he sees ahead as we enter potentially turbulent times for the world market. This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers.
