Mega Edition: A Trip Around The Headlines In Moscow In The Early Stages Of The Case (9/13/26)

In this episode, we take a trip back through the headlines coming out of Moscow on December 5 and 6, 2022, when the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were still unsolved and investigators were working through an enormous number of tips, interviews and pieces of evidence. At that point, police were still trying to determine whether the victims had been specifically targeted, whether one person or the house itself had been the focus, and how the killer had entered and escaped without being caught. Public attention was intensifying around the surviving roommates, the victims’ final movements, the missing murder weapon and the increasingly frantic search for surveillance footage and witnesses. Rumors were spreading just as quickly as verified information, forcing Moscow police to repeatedly push back against online speculation while families became more vocal about the lack of answers.

We then jump ahead to January 6, 2023, when the entire complexion of the case had changed following Bryan Kohberger’s arrest and the release of the probable-cause affidavit. Instead of a mystery with no publicly identified suspect, the headlines were suddenly focused on the white Hyundai Elantra, cellphone records, surveillance footage, Dylan Mortensen’s description of a masked man and the knife sheath recovered beside Madison Mogen that investigators said carried Kohberger’s DNA. The contrast between early December and early January showed just how quickly the investigation had evolved behind the scenes. What had looked from the outside like weeks of uncertainty had actually been a rapidly developing case, and by January the public was finally seeing the evidence investigators said had led them from an unidentified white sedan to a criminology doctoral student living just across the state line in Pullman.
