High Conflict: The Psychology of Why We Fight

What happens when a disagreement stops being about the original issue and becomes a battle between “us” and “them”? Drawing on Amanda Ripley’s work, this episode explores the hidden psychology of high conflict—from the La Brea tar-pit metaphor and tribal thinking to the “crockpot” problem, social exclusion, conflict entrepreneurs, and the illusion of communication. We also explore the path out: finding the real issue beneath the surface, listening to understand, practising looping, and resisting the urge to turn every disagreement into a fight for survival.
