Who Are You Really Working For? | Matt Beasley

Ephesians 6:5–9 — Who Are You Really Working For? Paul steps into the master-and-slave relationships of the first century and reorients them completely around one shared Master in heaven. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.

Paul tells those under authority to obey not as people-pleasers working only when someone's watching, but as those serving Christ from the heart — and he tells masters to drop the threats and treat the people under them as fellow image-bearers, because the true Master shows zero partiality between the two. Along the way, the sermon walks through Joseph's story in Potiphar's house as a picture of what it looks like to work in a way that lets people see God — whatever room, job, or season of life you find yourself in.

A few things to carry into your week:

- Whether you supervise people or answer to someone else, the real question is who you're actually working for — recognition and promotion, or Jesus.

- "Eye-service" is working hard only when someone's watching; bond-service to Christ looks the same whether anyone sees or not.

- Authority in Christ is never an excuse for threats or partiality — the people under you are equally made in God's image.

- Whatever season you're in — student, early career, retired, stay-at-home — your work is a place to worship, not just to earn.

"Are you working to be noticed, or working as an act of worship to the King who already sees you?"
