USGS Releases Comprehensive National Geologic Map 2.0 Covering All 50 States Amid Active Volcanic and Earthquake Activity

Across the United States this week, geologists and hazard scientists are tracking a mix of quiet mapping milestones and active volcanic and earthquake behavior that reveals how dynamic the nation’s subsurface remains. The United States Geological Survey reports that Version two point zero of the Cooperative National Geologic Map now provides seamless digital coverage for all fifty states, Alaska and Hawaii, along with most United States territories, giving researchers and planners an integrated view of rock types, fault systems, and past geologic events from coast to coast. According to the survey, this expanded map will support everything from groundwater management and mineral exploration to earthquake and landslide risk assessments in rapidly growing regions such as the Mountain West and the Southeast. In the geologically active state of Hawaii, scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory describe an episodic summit eruption at Kilauea volcano, where new vents opened within Halemaumau crater and have been producing short bursts of lava and spatter confined to the closed summit area inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The observatory notes that more than one hundred brief lava flow episodes have occurred since early September, accompanied by steady volcanic tremor and small earthquakes clustered beneath the summit. Although activity is restricted to the crater floor, high emissions of sulfur dioxide gas and volcanic smog downwind remain a concern for air quality, highlighting the continual interaction between volcanology and public health. Nearby on the Island of Hawaii, the United States Geological Survey reports a magnitude four point zero earthquake that struck on September thirteen about two miles south of the town of Pahala at a depth of roughly eight miles below sea level. Light shaking was felt locally, but the event did not affect the current behavior of either Kilauea or Mauna Loa, fitting into an ongoing pattern of deep seismicity in the region that geologists interpret as part of the complex magma and tectonic system beneath the island. Beyond the continental shelf, United States scientists monitoring Great Sitkin volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian arc describe a slow, steady eruption of lava within the summit crater, with minor earthquakes but no rapid escalation in activity. Globally, agencies in Indonesia report strong recent eruptions at the volcanic island Anak Krakatau, which sent ash clouds high into the atmosphere and temporarily closed multiple airports across western Indonesia, a reminder that similar monitoring and hazard mapping strategies used in the United States are part of an increasingly connected worldwide geologic observation network.
