Case 213: The Logan Inn: A Haunted Room, a Dead Soldier and the Mystery of Emily

The Logan Inn in New Hope, Pennsylvania, has been welcoming travellers for nearly 300 years, and with that history has come a formidable collection of ghost stories.

Room 6 is at the centre of many of them.

Guests have reported unexplained footsteps, voices, moving objects, pillows being pulled from beneath their heads, strange figures reflected in mirrors and the unmistakable scent of lavender. And then there is Emily, the woman said to haunt the room.

But who was Emily?

Depending on who tells the story, Emily has been described as the mother of a former owner, the daughter of the owners, a former owner herself, and even confused with other female spirits at the inn. Her portrait, her furniture, where she lived, where she died and even the paranormal activity attributed to her have changed as the story has been retold.

Anne traces the evolution of the Emily legend, going back through older accounts to discover what was originally reported, what was added later, and what we can actually establish about the real Emily Lutz.

And Emily isn't the Logan Inn's only mystery.

Deep beneath the inn is a basement where, according to legend, bodies were once stored when the frozen Pennsylvania ground made burial impossible. One particularly disturbing story claims that a man, later described in some versions as a Revolutionary War soldier, was placed amongst the dead only to wake and discover that everyone believed he was already a corpse.

Did it really happen? Is there evidence that bodies were ever stored beneath the Logan Inn? And how did a story about a man mistakenly believed dead evolve into reports of a ghostly soldier roaming the building and a disembodied voice calling for “help”?

Renata takes us through the extraordinary history of one of Pennsylvania's oldest inns, while Anne investigates the reported hauntings, eyewitness accounts, paranormal investigations and the changing folklore surrounding Emily, Room 6 and the soldier in the basement.
