Trucker Sees Bigfoot

This week on Sasquatch Odyssey, Brian welcomes Matt from Texas for the first installment of a two-part interview about an encounter that completely changed the direction of his life.

On the morning of May 20, 2019, Matt was driving an 18-wheeler loaded with fuel south on Highway 84 between Abilene and Coleman, Texas. Severe storms and tornadoes had torn through the area two days earlier, and as Matt approached the small community of Silver Valley, his attention was focused on the damage along the highway.

Then he noticed what he first thought was a black bull near the road.A second look made him think it was an enormous hog. Then it stood and began walking.As Matt closed the distance, he realized he was looking at something unlike anything he had ever seen before: an enormous, jet-black, muscular figure moving upright through the bright green grass toward the tree line.

Matt estimates the creature stood between seven and a half and eight feet tall, with massive shoulders, extraordinarily thick arms and legs, and a body he believes could have weighed close to a thousand pounds.

For nearly a minute, Matt watched from the cab of his truck as the figure moved across the open ground. At his closest point, he estimates he was only about 50 to 75 yards away. Then it reached the woods and seemed to disappear into the darkness.

But the encounter didn't end there. After delivering his load in Coleman, Matt immediately headed back toward the location.

As he approached the area again, he encountered multiple sheriff's vehicles slowly driving the shoulders of the highway, appearing to search the same stretch of road where he had seen the creature. Matt has always wondered whether another motorist—or possibly a nearby road crew—had seen something that morning and called law enforcement. The experience sent Matt into a research journey that has now lasted more than seven years.

He returned to the encounter site, began studying reports from across Texas, attended the Texas Bigfoot Conference, and eventually had several personal conversations with the late Dr. Jeff Meldrum, whose advice to “never stop looking” became a guiding principle in Matt's search.

In Part One, Matt takes us through the sighting in remarkable detail—the creature's size, movement, muscle structure, unusual behavior, and the exact moments that transformed Bigfoot from something he barely thought about into something he says he knows is real. And this was only the beginning.

In Part Two, Matt's story moves beyond that first highway encounter and into seven years of boots-on-the-ground research, tracks, possible evidence, close-range activity, and another sighting in the Texas woods.
