Darcy Van Poelgeest talks Doom Patrol, The Karman Blade, and The Cutting Garden

Comics writer Darcy Van Poelgeest joins Byron to discuss his new DC Comics project Doom Patrol, his Image Comics series The Karman Blade, and his new graphic novel The Cutting Garden. Darcy shares his take on Doom Patrol as the world's strangest heroes and as the brokest team in comics; why he embraced a heroes-for-hire concept instead of the usual unlimited-mansion-budget superhero fantasy; and how the disability community shaped his approach to writing Cliff, Rita, and Larry. Then, we get into the Larry and Miss Green scene that hit me harder than almost anything else as someone from that community. Finally some disability representation done well. Then we pivot to The Karman Blade, his reunion project with longtime collaborator Ian Bertram, a dark fantasy that strips the agency out of the hero protagonist, Anatta, that Darcy deliberately built to be hard to love but oddly that I immediately connected with.
