On Friday, September eleventh, AAA reported the national average for diesel had passed six dollars for the first time ever. Six dollars and six cents. Third record in a week. A year ago, it was three seventy. Half a world away, an Iranian-backed militia took an island in one of the two narrow gaps that carry a large share of the planet's oil, and the other gap has been near a standstill since February. Brian connects the water to the pump, then goes where most coverage will not.

Three parts. All of them matter.

FIRST, the two straits and who holds them now. The Houthis took the port of Mocha, then crossed by boat and took Perim, the island that splits the Bab el-Mandeb into two shipping lanes. Eighteen miles wide at the narrowest point, and twelve percent of global trade moves through. The Yemeni battalions there stood at twenty percent of their paper strength. The rest were names on a roster drawing a salary. American-built armored trucks were left parked where they sat, and the Houthis are driving them through town on camera now. At the other end, Hormuz has been nearly shut since the war with Iran began, and the Saudi pipeline built to bypass it was hit Friday by drones out of Iraq. That pipeline was the workaround for the first strait, and the second is the exit it feeds. Brian walks through who armed this, who benefits, and why one Chinese tanker sailed the blockade untouched.

SECOND, what happened at your pump and why diesel got hit harder than gasoline. California came in at seven ninety-eight. Oklahoma at five sixty. That spread is not the war, it is state policy, and Brian explains which is which. Then the part most coverage skips. Crude is not the reason diesel is where it is. The refineries are. Five million barrels a day of refining capacity is offline worldwide, and more oil out of the ground does not make cheaper fuel when the bottleneck is the machinery that turns it into diesel. Diesel is what the country runs on, and when it goes up it rides along on every item in every store, because it got there on a truck. And it lands in the middle of harvest.

THIRD, the part nobody wants to put a number on. There is a cost to keeping those waterways open that never shows up at the pump, and it is running out faster than we can replace it. Brian puts the arithmetic on the table. Stay to the end.
