Take It Personal - Deadly Threat Interview

Over the last 10 years, we’ve interviewed some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Some of our favorite rappers, some of your favorite rappers and plenty of people in between. Rappers, producers, record label executives and even media personalities.

But Take It Personal has never just been about playing the records you already know. Anybody can play the fucking hits.

We want to remind you why those records mattered, introduce you to the ones you might have missed and give you the stories and context behind the music. Because sometimes knowing the story can make a record sound completely different.

Sometimes the lesson comes from a classroom. Sometimes it comes through your speakers.

So after 10 years, we wanted to do something a little different.

COLD CASE FILES: The Stories You Never Heard.

We’re still chopping it up with guests, but this time we’re putting the spotlight on people who might not have gotten enough of it the first time around.

The names you remember but don’t know enough about. The records you know, but not always the stories behind them. The people who helped build this culture without always getting the attention, credit or flowers they deserved.

More eyeballs. More ears. More attention. More flowers while they’re still here to receive them.

Our first Cold Case File: Deadly Threat.

We get into:

• His East Coast influence • Rakim & Kurupt • Growing up with DJ Pooh & Bobcat • Breaking with the Wild Style Crew • The origins of the Likwit Crew • Befriending Ice Cube during his Above the Law beef • Debuting on Color Blind and how the record came together • Working with King Tee and being around Tha Triflin’ Album and 21 & Over • Writing for 2Pac, Eazy-E & Yo-Yo • The St. Ides commercial • Touring with then-labelmates Edo G & Black Sheep • Walking from the Bronx to Brooklyn with Edo G just to get some weed • The Friday soundtrack • The story behind NY ’87 • Working with Dr. Dre • Breaking down Sickinnahead • The Mack 10 origin story — when he was still the rappers’ barber • Bumping into LL Cool J at Sylvia’s • Jumping on Nas’ Where Are They Now remix • The 300–400 unreleased Deadly Threat songs sitting in the vault • RC cars • His 10,000+ sports card collection
