Kohberger Crime Photos: Idaho Passed a Law and It Already Failed

Idaho changed its law specifically to prevent what happened this week. Senate Bill 1250 passed 34-0 in the Senate and 68-0 in the House. The governor signed it in March 2026. Effective July 1st: death-investigation photographs are exempt from public-records disclosure. Alivea Goncalves, Kaylee's sister, spent a legislative session fighting for it.

Seventy-six days after it took effect, the Latah County Prosecutor's Office, Moscow Police, and Idaho State Police warned that unredacted crime-scene photographs of the four murdered University of Idaho students had allegedly been given to journalists and social-media creators. Prosecutor Bill Thompson admitted he doesn't know whether he can charge anyone.

The law closed the government door. It did not recall the copies already outside government custody. Kohberger's case generated sixty-eight terabytes of discovery — thirteen thousand photograph files — copied to prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, experts. Each copy legitimate. Each one a set of hands that has to choose obligation over attention. Nobody watermarked the files. Nobody built an audit trail the public has been told about.

This has happened before in this same case. A Dateline leak in 2025 triggered a special prosecutor — over a year later, no public result. A corrections employee leaked prison video of Kohberger. He was identified, resigned, and police concluded there was no criminal violation to charge. Families sued over sloppy redactions. A judge ordered bodies blacked out. Idaho State Police then released nearly three thousand photographs and missed a body anyway.

A YouTube creator with nine thousand subscribers claimed she had the unredacted material and told her audience it was coming. The law was supposed to be the last wall. It lasted seventy-six days.
