Did Bryan Kohberger Understand What He Was Pleading Guilty To?

Bryan Kohberger's lawyers said in writing that they were not calling him incompetent, then told Judge Steven Hippler they needed expert help to communicate with him about whether to take a deal. Both statements come from the memo unsealed on September 22, 2026, in his post-conviction case.

This episode explains what an ex parte filing is, why the state never saw the May 2025 supplement, and what competency covers versus what the defense actually described. It covers Dr. Rachel Orr's autism diagnosis, the "little insight into his own behaviors" finding from that filing, and the June 26 order that rejected four alternate perpetrators as "entirely irrelevant."

Then it follows Rauch's argument for a new judge and the state's motion to dismiss the petition as "bare, conclusory, and unsupported." The calendar closes it out: October 15 for the disqualification hearing, November 13 for the amended petition, and June 2027 if a hearing is granted.
