Michael Proctor, a former Massachusetts State Police trooper, served as the lead investigator in the case against Karen Read, who is accused of the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. Proctor's role encompassed overseeing the investigation, gathering evidence, and providing testimony during Read's initial trial. However, his conduct during the investigation came under scrutiny due to the revelation of inappropriate and derogatory text messages he sent about Read to family and colleagues. In March 2025, following an internal review, Proctor was terminated from the Massachusetts State Police.
