Jason A. Mangano (author of The Heroic Dead) - 9.2025

"When someone comes to you for help, take your time with them."

Nicholas Tanek of YKF interviews author Jason A. Mangano about his novel The Heroic Dead. Jason discusses blending Norse mythology (Einherjar resurrection) with the biblical story of Job to explore faith, duty, and the moral cost of a military serum that revives dead soldiers as rage-fueled warriors. We also brainstorm a fun low-budget BDSM dungeon horror movie idea!

"I had an idea and we just started talking about it."

From the Author

The Heroic Dead was my first book and and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of bringing my vision to life. People often ask me how I came up with the idea for the book and I can honestly say that it arose during a night of cocktails with friends. I was merely expressing what I would want to see in a action/sci-fi movie. What would that look like? How would mine be different? What would separate it from many of the movies released today? I wanted something to incorporate terrorism and world politics on the news with something ghoulish yet technological. The details flowed with each cocktail. After hearing how much they would love to see a movie like I was describing, I got to work the next morning. I had no idea how to write a screenplay but I knew what I wanted to say and slowly it came to life. Soon, I had written a screenplay! Some amateur film critics I knew loved it. The problem was... I didn't know how to get it in front of the right people in Hollywood. I certainly didn't know anyone in the movie business and apparently production houses don't accept unsolicited material. So...after a while I decided to convert my screenplay into a novel. That is why The Heroic Dead is shorter than many books and reads so quickly. It was originally written to be a movie so it is a bit faster paced than much longer novels. I didn't want to add a lot of fluff just to increase my page count. I love action movies (as well as a bit of gore) so that's where I began. I also love when a story can tie in ancient mythology or religion to bring those stories of the past into current time. My goal in this book was to provide a mild religious undertone to keep the reader guessing if there was indeed the hand of a higher authority at work as it is inferred in movies such as Pale Rider or The Book of Eli. And, for those of you who went to Sunday School (or Hebrew School), you will notice that story of my protagonist, Job Tillman, parallels the biblical story of Job quite closely. I hope when people read the book they will reflect on the question "Does the end justify the means?." The book is not intended to push judgement either way. I will let the reader decide that and I can't elaborate much further without giving anything away. As for future novels, I have not begun work on one yet. My friends and family have been encouraging me to begin the sequel to The Heroic Dead. I might. I have some ideas on that. However, I have an idea for another story which will take ancient mythology into the present in a more world changing event. We'll see. I hope you enjoy reading The Heroic Dead as much as I enjoyed writing it. About the AuthorJason Mangano brings an original take to the undead genre as well as current events in his first book, The Heroic Dead. Jason's curiosity in religion and mythology was originally piqued in high school when he attended Christian Brothers Academy. After graduating with a B.S. in Finance from West Virginia University, he went to further his education in Mortuary Science at Mercer County Community College which undoubtedly furthered his interest into the macabre. Today, Jason and his family reside in northern New Jersey where he works as a police officer.
