A Genus and Two New Species of Staphylinids with Fang-Shuo Hu

A Genus and Two New Species of Staphylinids with Fang-Shuo Hu

There’s a new genus of Staphylinid beetle named after one of the most legendary Manga characters! Fang-Shuo Hu and his coauthor Alexey Solodovnikov have been working on teasing apart some complex beetle lineages, leading them to describe a new genus and two new species. The genus Luffy is named after One Piece’s infamous Monkey D. Luffy, and the species are L. nika (Luffy’s magical fruit) and L. schillhammeri in honor of Harald Schillhammer, a Staphylinologist whose mentorship helped Fang-Shuo along the way.

Also part of this conversation is Rodrigo Salvador, editor in chief of the Journal of Geek Studies which publishes peer-reviewed articles about a variety of cultural topics. Rodrigo and Fang-Shuo discuss the impact of these interdisciplinary projects, and how naming a species or writing a paper can provide a gateway into taxonomy for those who might have never considered it important before.

Fang-Shuo Hu’s paper “Luffy gen. nov., a new genus of Staphylinina (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Staphylininae), remarkable for understanding the Eucibdelus lineage” is in volume 1281 of Zookeys.
