Ep. #1139: Giles Martin

Giles Martin is here to discuss his work with the Beatles and the new deluxe reissue of their 1965 album, Rubber Soul, challenges and surprises he encountered delving into the original session tapes and his unique temporal mindset to mixing a sixty-year-old album, how the emotional tenor of a song can influence his technical approach, his history remixing Beatles music including Revolver and Sgt, Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, why he supposes so many children of the Beatles and from within their orbit have chosen to follow in their parents’ musical footsteps, the Beatles’ desire to make records that sounded as mighty as those by American bands and the conflicts this caused with their own label’s mastering and manufacturing departments, how Frank Sinatra fits into all of this, Martin’s use of machine learning to enhance Beatle recordings and fulfill their original vision, input he receives from Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, insights about the discovery of the previously unreleased, unknown John Lennon home demo for “Little Girl,” George Harrison trying to teach the Beatles “Think For Yourself,” the increasing humanization of the Beatles, Martin’s preferred music listening format, and much more.
