Ep 18: The Anglo-Saxons: A Case Study in Kingship, ft. Knoxite Theocrat

In this week’s episode of Cast Your Nets, BigTuna is joined by Knoxite Theocrat, an expert in Anglo-Saxon history and Twitter poster. The two discuss the Bible’s guidelines for a King, using the Kings of the Old Testament and the Kings of Anglo-Saxon Britain as case studies. Subjects discussed include the Bible’s original mandate for Israel’s King in Deuteronomy, the duties & privileges mentioned therein, the reign of King David & Solomon, the admirable moral qualities of King Hezekiah & King Josiah, the growth of Christian Civilization from Rome into England, whether OT Kings were a genuine model for Anglo-Saxon Kings, the rule of respective Anglo-Saxon leaders like Aethelbert of Kent, Oswald of Northumbria, & King Alfred the Great; the particular Christian virtues of Alfred’s rule, and what Kingship looks like in an age where there are no real Kings. Verses like Deut. 17:14-20, 1 Samuel 10:25, 2 Kings 18 & 22, and Proverbs 25:2 are used to bolster the arguments made. In addition, historical references to Asser’s “The Life of King Alfred”, King Alfred’s Law Codes, and other historical Anglo-Saxon works are made. Tune in for all of this and more!
