EP 086 Who Owns the News? | Conspiracy, Corporate Manipulation Culture

Modern Media And The Corporate Architecture Behind “Reality”

Conspiracy and modern systems meet in this investigation of who owns the news—and how media consolidation may shape the stories audiences hear. Tracy examines corporate ownership, cross-ownership conflicts, and Sinclair’s mandated local segments to ask how narrative control works inside modern media. Rather than asking listeners to accept a theory outright, this episode follows the structures and incentives behind the coverage.

Tracy argues that mainstream news avoids the most important question—who pays and owns it—because media silence is structurally built into a highly consolidated system where a handful of corporations control most outlets. It claims cross-ownership and conflicts of interest prevent networks from investigating their parent companies, while groups like Sinclair standardize local coverage through mandated segments. The episode cites consolidation trends from 50 major media owners in 1983 down to six today, and frames advertiser dependence—especially pharmaceuticals, defense, and energy—as a second layer of control. It references Chomsky and Herman’s “propaganda model,” the revolving door between government, boards, and industry, and deregulation milestones from the end of the Fairness Doctrine through later telecom policy changes. The conclusion urges viewers to question corporate-controlled narratives, algorithms, and what stories never make it to air.
