Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 1 - His Roommate Wasn't Surprised

Nick Reiner described himself, at 22, as a spoiled white rich kid from a Hollywood family. He said he chose homelessness in Maine, New Jersey and Texas over treatment programs that weren't run his way. He said he stole OxyContin from a sick old woman, and he said the persona that cost his parents 17 or 18 rehab stays was one he picked on purpose. All of that is on tape. What his rehab roommate knew the moment the news broke from Brentwood is where Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story begins.

Danny Svilar shared a room with Nick at a Malibu treatment center in 2009, when both were 15, and he was there over a shopping addiction. Svilar says the room cost roughly $60,000 a month, that Nick went after another patient and tried to get physical with him, and that the way Nick talked about his parents after lights out was chilling. Rob and Michele Reiner, he says, never missed a family group.

Chapter one follows the money and the people who spent it. Around 2011 Nick met Matt Elisofon in yet another facility, and the two started writing a show in longhand about the people they'd met in rehab. Michele told Rob to make it, and Castle Rock put up around $3 million for Being Charlie, with Nick Robinson as the son and Cary Elwes as a cold father running for governor. When public radio's Scott Simon asked Nick whether the character he'd built on himself was hard to like, Nick said probably so. The Hollywood Reporter found two warring agendas in one movie. It premiered in Toronto on Nick's 22nd birthday, the same year his parents told a newspaper that the counselors had called their son a liar and a manipulator, and that believing them had been the mistake.
