Lady Tremaine Book Club

In this book club episode of Literature on the Rocks, Sunny, Rachel, and Rox return to the world of Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhouser for a conversation that had us rethinking everything we thought we knew about fairy tales.

We discuss the novel's ending and the idea of a "happily ever after." We share our own definitions of what a fulfilling life looks like and how the book challenges traditional fairy tale expectations.

Of course, we also compare this version of Lady Tremaine to the one many of us grew up with in Disney's Cinderella. How did our feelings toward the infamous stepmother change after hearing her side of the story? Did this retelling make us more sympathetic, or did some of her actions remain difficult to forgive?

The conversation also explores what truly makes someone a hero. Is it courage, sacrifice, good intentions, or simply being the person whose story gets told? As this novel blurs the line between hero and villain, we examine how perspective can shape the characters we root for—and the ones we judge.

Full spoilers, fairy tale debates, and plenty of discussion about the stories behind the stories. Grab a drink and join us with a Stepmother's Cider in hand. 🥂🍎✨
