Shooting at Atlanta Technical College leaves student dead, another wounded.

On the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, a male student at Atlanta Technical College tragically lost his life to a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an accidental discharge of his firearm within a classroom that had injured another student. The heartbreaking incident unfolded around 8:45 a.m. at the institution's campus situated at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW in southwest Atlanta. Based on the initial investigation conducted by the Atlanta Police Department, a male student who had a firearm in his possession inside a classroom experienced an unintended discharge that struck another student in the leg.

In the moments following the weapon's discharge, the student left the classroom and entered a campus bathroom, where he sustained the fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers located his body shortly upon their arrival at the scene.

The student who sustained the leg injury was transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital. Authorities confirmed that the student remained alert, conscious, and breathing, with expectations for a complete recovery from injuries that were not life-threatening.

Authorities have chosen to keep both students' identities confidential while the investigation continues. Officials emphasized that this represented an isolated occurrence with no active or continuing danger to those in the community.

Following a temporary campus lockdown implemented to ensure safety, Atlanta Technical College gradually returned to regular classes and operations as the afternoon progressed.
Authorities have shared that their initial findings suggest the shooting occurred unintentionally, and we understand how concerning this situation must be for everyone involved. Georgia's laws do permit firearms in certain higher education environments and designated campus spaces, though investigators are carefully examining the specific details surrounding how and why the weapon came to be handled within the classroom setting.
Under Georgia'spersonal handguns are indeed permitted on public college and university campuses, as established through House Bill 280 and Senate Bill 319, though it's important to note that meaningful restrictions and specific exceptions are in place to help keep our communities safer.
