Engineering Insights S2 E91 | Ski Lift & Aerial Ropeway Systems

How do enormous cable cars carry people safely over mountains, valleys, and steep terrain?

In Engineering Insights S2 E91, we explore the engineering behind ski lifts and aerial ropeway systems — from the cables and towers to the drive systems, grip mechanisms, braking systems, and safety features that keep passengers moving above the ground.

Aerial ropeways may look simple from below, but the engineering is anything but.

We examine how engineers determine cable tension, tower spacing, passenger capacity, wind loads, and the forces created as cabins and chairs move along the route.

At the heart of the system is the rope. Depending on the design, a ropeway may use separate haul and support ropes or a single circulating cable. Large sheaves guide the cable around the system while powerful drive machinery keeps everything moving at a controlled speed.

The grips connecting chairs or cabins to the cable are another critical component. They must hold securely while allowing the system to operate smoothly and, in many detachable systems, release and reconnect passengers at stations.

Mountain environments create unique engineering challenges. Wind can cause cabins to sway. Snow and ice can accumulate on equipment. Temperature changes affect materials and cable behavior. Terrain determines tower placement. Emergency situations must also be considered before the system ever carries its first passenger.

Safety is built into every part of an aerial ropeway. Braking systems, emergency drives, monitoring equipment, rope inspections, tower structures, grips, evacuation procedures, and redundant safety systems all work together.

Modern systems can continuously monitor operating conditions and detect problems before they become dangerous.

The result is a transportation system capable of carrying thousands of people through difficult terrain without requiring roads or tracks.
