The Greatest V8: A Complete History Of The Cosworth DFV and DFX

When it comes to iconic racing engines, few of them can hold a candle to the Cosworth DFV, DFX, and their variations. A V8 that, at its largest displaced 3.99L and at its most powerful made nearly 1,000hp, it remains the winningest F1 engine of all time and the most dominating IndyCar engine of all time as well.

The DFV was the brainchild of Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin, the larger than life geniuses that founded Cosworth Engineering in England. Drawn from a blank sheet of paper and refined into an engine that was largely unbeatable, it's a marvel of internal combustion magic.

This is the complete history of this engine that had some unlikely roots, interesting predecessors, and an effect on auto racing that is still be felt today. A tiny engineerring firm in England captured the attention and sometimes the ire of the racing world with this iconic little V8, perhaps the greatest such engine ever made.
