Christianity & Halloween: Where Do We Draw The Line?

Christianity & Halloween: Where Do We Draw The Line?

Should Christians celebrate Halloween? Is trick-or-treating harmless family fun, or should Christian parents be more careful about the spiritual messages behind Halloween traditions?

In this episode of Abraham's Wallet, Steven Manuel examines what the Bible says about Halloween, witchcraft, the occult, and spiritual discernment—and offers practical, joyful alternatives for Christian families who want to honor God without withdrawing from their communities.

Halloween has become a familiar part of American family life. Costumes, candy, pumpkins, neighborhood parties, and decorations are everywhere. But when Halloween celebrations include Ouija boards, séances, witches, spirits, graveyards, and images of death, where should Christian parents draw the line?

Steven begins with a recent Halloween marketing campaign featuring occult imagery, then considers a larger question: Are Christians becoming too comfortable treating spiritually serious things as harmless entertainment?

Drawing from Deuteronomy 18, Acts 19, 1 Thessalonians 5, and other biblical passages, Steven explores the difference between enjoying a season and participating in practices or symbolism that Scripture warns against.

He also discusses the testimony of Rihan Swiegelaar, a former leader in the South African Satanic Church who became a Christian. Steven considers Swiegelaar's warnings about Halloween and occult practices, while distinguishing his personal testimony from the direct teachings of Scripture.

But this conversation isn't simply about everything Christian families should avoid.

Steven shares ways his own family has approached celebrations, hospitality, and biblical traditions, including Purim, All Saints Day, remembering faithful Christians who came before us, and gathering for worship and prayer.

The goal isn't to raise fearful children or create another list of religious rules. It's to help Christian fathers and mothers lead their households with conviction, wisdom, joy, and biblical discernment.
