7 Signs Your Parkinson’s May Be Changing Before You Realize It

What if your Parkinson’s is changing, but you've been adapting so gradually that you haven't even noticed?

Maybe your medication doesn't last quite as long. Maybe walking requires more concentration. Or maybe the same activities you did six months ago now leave you completely exhausted.

Parkinson’s doesn't always announce change with a dramatic new symptom.

Sometimes the biggest clue is how much harder ordinary life has become.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I share seven signs worth paying attention to:

• Automatic movements require more thought: Getting out of a chair, turning, or walking takes more concentration.

• Medication windows change: Your medication takes longer to work or seems to wear OFF sooner.

• Walking requires more planning: Doorways, crowds, turns, and uneven surfaces demand more attention.

• Your voice changes: People ask you to repeat yourself more often, or your speech becomes softer.

• Non-motor symptoms become more noticeable: Sleep, constipation, fatigue, anxiety, or brain fog begin affecting your day differently.

• Multitasking becomes harder: Doing two things at once requires more effort than it used to.

• The same activities cost more energy: You can still do things, but the recovery afterward takes longer.

And that final one might be the most important.

Stop asking only, “Can I still do it?” Start asking, “What does it cost me now?”

I also share a recent experience at the Canada-U.S. border where I suddenly froze while trying to turn away from a customs officer. It was a reminder of how Parkinson’s can make something as automatic as turning around unexpectedly complicated.

You'll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen talks about noticing small changes before I do, without making me feel like I'm constantly being monitored.

Her advice?

“Notice the change. Don't become the change police.”

Because noticing changes isn't about assuming the worst.

It's about recognizing patterns, having better conversations with your neurologist, and adapting so you can keep doing the things that matter.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
