Walls vs Infill: Why the Outline of a 3D Print Carries the Load

Walls vs Infill: Why the Outline of a 3D Print Carries the Load

Most people chasing a stronger 3D print reach for the infill slider. The testing says they are usually turning the wrong dial. In this episode we look at walls, also called perimeters or wall loops: the solid outlines a printer traces around every layer, and why adding a couple more of them so often beats piling on infill for the same plastic.

You'll come away understanding what walls and perimeters are and why two is the out-of-the-box setting; the simple physics of why the outside of a part does most of the work when it bends, with a tube-versus-rod example; what CNC Kitchen's hook tests and HackSpace magazine's bending test actually measured, including a same-weight comparison where extra walls won by about 22 per cent; where infill still earns its place (crushing loads, top surfaces, flexible TPU); and practical settings, from three walls for everyday parts to four to six for brackets and hooks, plus wider lines, Arachne and the extra walls you get around screw holes.

Handy if you print functional parts at home, or if you are designing a part to have printed and want it to survive real use without paying for plastic it doesn't need.
