233. Visions: The Murder of Tracey Schoettlin

Today, we are en route to Birmingham, Alabama, where we'll meet Tracey Schoettlin, a 26-year-old with big aspirations. In the summer of 1986, Tracey worked as a waitress at the Southpoint American Cafe while diligently preparing for the LSAT, the crucial exam for law school admission. She took the LSAT multiple times until she achieved the necessary score for acceptance into Samford Law School. Her ultimate aim was to become a lawyer and serve an underserved community. Tracey's determination and ambition indicated that she was well on her way to realizing her dreams. On the fateful evening of July 13, 1986, Tracey left the restaurant around 11 p.m. intending to head home. Tragically, she never reached her destination. As the investigation unfolded, the circumstances surrounding her murder were deeply disturbing and nearly unbelievable. This homicide case would ultimately evolve into one of the most extensive criminal investigations in Jefferson County. The perplexing question remained: What could have motivated someone to inflict harm upon this young woman?Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘Visions: The Murder of Tracey Schoettlin.’Listener Discretion by the oh-so-talented @octoberpodVHS All Music by our EP Nico @theinkypawprint (formally known as @wetalkofdreams) Promos from our friends at Angels’ Voices Silenced No More angelsvoicesnm.org and @Twisted_PodSources: https://law.justia.com/cases/alabama/court-of-appeals-criminal/1990/577-so-2d-541-0.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt7846082/https://www.facebook.com/WBRCnews/videos/who-is-tommy-bradley/589135551060/https://case-law.vlex.com/vid/bradley-v-state-6-890015804https://www.facebook.com/WBRCnews/videos/25-years-later-the-tracey-schoettlin-murder/2640830944248/https://www.al.com/opinion/2013/03/alabama_justice_system_your_vi.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/795110929/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/795110929/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/795087157/?terms=Tracey%20Schoettlin%20murder&match=1https://www.wbrc.com/story/16043204/25-years-later-the-tracey-schoettlin-case/ Learn more about your ad choices. 85. Friendship Fraud: George Kalomeris

85. Friendship Fraud: George Kalomeris

Fifty-six-year-old Thomas Jones was a reserved kind of fella. He lived modestly and wanted a simple kind of life so the community of Mulford Delaware provided exactly what he wanted and needed. Thomas lived by himself and was a farmer. He owned and operated a small farm but he was not quite your typical farmer. Thomas was a paraplegic but that didn’t stop him from doing what he loved to do including farming his land. It was August 13, 1997, when a hired healthcare nurse stopped by to check on Thomas. The nurse called out his name after not answering the door. As she looked around, she knew something was not quite right. Thomas kept a clean and tidy house and things always had their place. There were dishes on the table and a few papers strewn about. His wheelchair was not in the house, so she ventured outside thinking maybe he was just outside. As she was looking around, she saw something and it was not good. There was a splattering of blood in a line as if something was bleeding as it was walking away. The nurse rushed to call 9-1-1. This is just the start of a twisted tale as it just weirder from here. 79. The Murder Game

79. The Murder Game

It’s January 18, 1987, at the Alpine Manor Nursing home in Walker, Michigan when a nurse, who was making her rounds, went into the room of a 60-year-old Alzheimer’s patient named Marguerite Chambers. The older woman was unresponsive and not breathing. A team rushed in to revive Marguerite but it was too late. It seems that the woman died sometime during the night. Death is not uncommon in nursing homes but Marguerite was still pretty healthy and her death was not expected. Her family had been in to visit her just the day before and had brought their loved one a balloon bouquet. Her passing was a shock to them but being that she was in a later stage in life, they knew it would happen one day. As is standard practice the staff let the family know and that they needed to come and retrieve her belongings. It was only then that a family member noticed that one of the balloons that they have given their beloved mother and friend was missing. Did someone take one of Marguerite’s balloons and her life? The answer would come but not before others would die just as mysteriously. 78. To Protect and Serve...and Murder : Gerard Schaefer

On July 21, 1972, a man named Gerald John Schaefer picked up two teenage girls who were hitch-hiking. Schaefer told 17-year-old Pamela Wells and 18-year-old Nancy Trotter that hitchhiking was illegal in Martin County. It wasn’t, but they were young, so they believed him. What this stranger had planned for these two young teens would, thankfully, not happen. The story these two girls would tell officers would lead to a trail of victims and from an unlikely suspect.
