On October 27, 1988, McLean County Coroner William Anderson had just come from the Central Catholic vs. University High School football game. Afterward, he was due to meet with members of his re-election campaign to go over strategies. Before the meeting, Anderson was volunteered by the others to get beer for the meeting. He went to the closest store, S&S Liquor Store, located at 703 N. Clinton Street in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. Anderson grabbed a six-pack and headed home for the strategy session. Just two to three minutes later, after having made it only a few blocks, Anderson’s pager went off, alerting him to go back to S&S Liquor Store. When he returned, he stepped straight into one of the worst tragedies in the town’s history. Join me as I walk you through the tragedy known as the S&S Liquor Store Murders. In June 2018, Tristan Beaudette and his brother-in-law Scott McCurdy had left their wives in Orange County to embark on a final camping trip together before Tristan and his wife Erica relocated to the Bay Area. Their home for the night …Malibu Creek State Park, near beautiful Malibu Beach. After a night by the campfire, Beaudette and McCurdy went to their respective tents and settled in for bed. Already asleep inside the separate tents were their most treasured possessions: Scott’s two boys, ages 3 and 5 and Tristan’s daughters, 2 and 4. Sometime after 1 in the morning on June 22, 2018, Scott was awakened by what he thought were fireworks. Then he heard Tristan’s daughters crying. Scott told his boys to stay put while he went to Tristan’s tent to investigate. There, he saw Tristan lying face down in the center of the tent and his daughters huddled together, crying. Tristan’s face was covered in blood.  Given Malibu’s reputation as a safe beach town, nobody believed Tristan’s murder was a random act of violence. On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The prosecution claimed that her words led to Conrad's death. In this episode, Jami walks listeners through the case and breaks down the docuseries I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v.
