Stephen Bullivant | Mass Exodus: The ‘Who?’, ‘When?’ and ‘Why?’ of British Catholic Decline

Stephen Bullivant | Mass Exodus: The ‘Who?’, ‘When?’ and ‘Why?’ of British Catholic Decline

In this lecture, Stephen Bullivant, prof. of Theology and the Sociology of Religion at St. Mary’s University (London), "investigates commonalities among several mainstream denominations in Europe, the Catholic Church in Britain and their significant decline over a half-century. This is true across a wide range of empirical indicators of religious vitality, including Mass attendance, retention/conversion rates, vocations, etc. Precisely when this decline started, and for what reason or reasons, is a subject of intense debate. This lecture will propose a new answer."

This is the fifth lecture (of seven) in the series "The Many Guises of European Catholicism", that the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies is organizing with support from the Centre for European Studies at Lund University.

Alison Scott-Baumann | Academic Freedom, Student Activism and War in the Middle East

What challenges do universities face when compelled to respond to crisis and student activism? What are the effects of self-censorship, polarisation, and the proliferation of social media? What innovative approaches are available for the university as a committed social actor - also beyond the confines of campus? How can universities, in short, remain bodies of evidence-based knowledge and principled engagement, without compromising academic freedom and pluralism? In this episode of R&T–in collaboration with the podcast HT-Samtal– Torsten Janson (senior lecturer in Islamic Studies, at the CTR) curates a conversation with Alison Scott-Baumann, on academic freedom in light of the emergencies in the Middle East. The conversation was recorded in the LUX building, on the 11th sept. 2024.  Alison Scott-Baumann is Professor of Society and Belief in the Centre of Islamic Studies in the Near and Middle East Department at SOAS and her work has two interrelated and also distinct research strands, social justice and philosophy. Terje Stordalen | Biblical Narrative in a Century of Newspapers

This episode of R&T is lecture by Terje Stordalen;  professor of Old Testament exegesis at the University of Oslo since 2006 and honorary doctor at Lund university 2024. Stordalen is an influential and versatile researcher with a clear interdisciplinary interest. In addition to traditional issues associated with the historical, literary, and hermeneutic problem fields of biblical texts, he has devoted his scientific work to cultural research and collective memory. He uses carefully selected social science methods to study ancient texts and cultures, including the perspective of material religion. Stordalen has also been the leader of several interdisciplinary projects and research groups, and his efforts within the OTSEM network, which brings together 150 researchers at 17 universities, have been crucial for the network’s development. Stordalen has been a recurring guest at the Faculty of Theology in Lund for many years. Over the years, he has inspired and enabled many exchanges between Lund University and the University of Oslo, and has also been a good critical friend in connection with quality reviews and research evaluations at the faculty. “Terje Stordalen’s contributions to Old Testament research are significant,” says the Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Professor Stephan Borgehammar. “His research, his collaboration with colleagues in Lund, and his constructive commitment to the development of the Faculty of Theology, we want to acknowledge with this honorary doctorate.” Stordalen received his award at the doctoral promotion in Lund on May 31, 2024 and held the lecture "Biblical Narrative in a Century of Newspapers" on May 30th.
