Fasting Q&A with Megan Ramos: Hair Thinning, Plateaus, Caffeine Sensitivity, Digestion Speed, and Keto Breath

Fasting Q&A with Megan Ramos: Hair Thinning, Plateaus, Caffeine Sensitivity, Digestion Speed, and Keto Breath

Episode #152

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan Ramos answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I have just started fasting and am struggling to extend my fasts to 36 hours as I have two small children and we eat dinner together every day. Any tips? [01:57]

2. I do IF five days a week, a 36-hour fast and no fasting on the other two days. I feel fantastic and the weight is coming off, However, my hair has recently started thinning. I’ve heard this could be because fasting is a stressor on the body. I also work out 3-4 times a week and have two jobs, one of which is pretty stressful and high pressure. Is the weekly 36-hour fast just too much for me? [07:40]

3. I’ve progressed into a 3x42 protocol over three months and the NSVs and systemic healing has been miraculous! I’ve not seen a weight or body-fat decrease over the last four weeks after a 25-pound loss in the first few months. Is a plateau this long normal? [12:25]

4. Would you recommend leaning heavily into fat fasting when initially trying to establish a pattern of therapeutic fasting? I am finding it easier to do longer fasts (24 hours+) when I fat fast beforehand, but have some concern that maybe this could have long-term implications. It almost seems like ‘dieting’ which will end once the therapeutic level of fasting ends and then I will have to reestablish another eating pattern? [16:16]

5. I quit coffee a few months ago as it was affecting my sleep and I would also experience extreme sugar cravings 1-2 hours after drinking it. Since stopping coffee, I have noticed similar effects with green and black tea plus I also get the jitters and an increased heart rate. Most recently, I have been getting insomnia after eating dark chocolate. Clearly, I am becoming more sensitive to caffeine! Is this common for fasters? Or maybe it is age related? I’m a 43-year-old woman. [20:50]

6. I have been fasting for almost two years (alternate-day fasting). I notice it takes longer for me to digest meals now vs before I started fasting. Is this normal and does this mean it also takes me longer to get into a fasted state now? [24:59]

7. I need help with keto breath/tongue! I’ve tried drinking more water, mouth wash, tongue scrapers, food-grade hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. No change! I makes me gag so much I just want to eat to make it stop! The only thing I haven’t tried is oil pulling. Help! [28:51]

Episode #74 In today’s episode, Terri and Nadia discuss the Hot Topic of Self-Sabotage.  Their conversation covers some theories about why we ALL self-sabotage and then how we can come to understand our unique reasons and learn ways to address these underlying causes. Lastly, Nadia answers one of your questions: Women like me are constantly told, “Women should not fast.” It was recently suggested to me to eat complex carbs and starchy vegetables a week before my cycle starts and my body will thank me for it. I'm curious why it's said that women need carbs but men do not. Fasting Q&A: Children and Snacking, Food Intolerances Since Fasting, Meals to Break a Fast, Hair Loss, and More.

Fasting Q&A: Children and Snacking, Food Intolerances Since Fasting, Meals to Break a Fast, Hair Loss, and More.

Episode #72 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions: 1. I obviously don't allow my children (11 and 13) to fast. They are hungry quite often though. Should I be guiding them to not eat snacks and to just eat larger meals so as to build a strong foundation of not snacking for their future metabolic health or should I listen to their hunger cues, considering that they are growing, and give them snacks on demand? Healthy snacks of course! What will set them up for future success health-wise? [02:17] 2. I have been into extended fasting for over a year now and have noticed I suddenly have all of these food intolerances that I didn’t have before, or haven't had since I was a little girl. As a child, I was lactose intolerant, but as I got older, I was able to tolerate most dairy. Since I've started extended fasting, I can’t tolerate any dairy at all without extreme flatulence and digestive consequences in the bathroom later. I’ve also noticed increased sensitivity to eggs, amongst other things. Has extended fasting caused these intolerances? [08:32] 3. What are the best foods to break a fast with? Is it best to break with a regular meal or something soft and easy to digest? I’ve heard eggs aren’t a good choice but it seems like eggs would be easy on an empty tummy? [12:22]  4. How many eating days should you have between fasting? I like the 60/40 rule but a lot of people are saying you have to eat half as long as you fasted. Is that from another source besides The Fasting Method because 60/40 is definitely not half and people are pretty adamant in the Facebook group that you have to eat half as long as you fasted. [18:27]  5. I’ve been doing OMAD for the last 4 months and my hair is falling out, a lot. Also, my periods are now very long and heavy, and my anxiety is through the roof. What happening and what can I do to fix it? [22:09] 6. What do you think about taking beef liver supplements to obtain electrolytes? You recommend taking electrolytes as needed, but how would our ancestors have obtained salt and magnesium? [26:30] The blog posts Nadia mentioned can be found here:  https://www.doctornadia.com/single-post/2016/06/05/wheres-the-liver https://www.doctornadia.com/single-post/2020/05/28/the-right-balance-between-fasting-and-eating-for-weight-loss Learn More About Our Community: https://www.thefastingmethod.com Join our FREE Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/TFMNetwork Watch Us On YouTube: https://bit.ly/TFMYouTube Follow Us on Instagram: @fastingmethod This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional care by a doctor or other qualified medical professional.
