#18 Hayat Al-Qawasmi

"The soldiers had weapons and kicked us out in the daytime. We left Jerusalem for Khalil. We had a car, but the rest of the people were on foot, even barefoot. I saw people fleeing, walking, running, men, women, children, dead people by the side of the street. Two months later we started fighting with the jews, but they were too strong." ”My father had funded the Egyptian army in Al-Faludja with food, with weapons, with every thing. The Egyptian army was besieged in Al-Faludja. After the war the Egyptian army returned to Egypt. A leader from the Egyptian army sent a letter to King Farouk telling him my father was funding and helping them. So if you leave him in Palestine he will have issues with the jews. So this military plane from the Egyptian air force came and they took us. We left the door to our house open so other people could move in. They covered my father with a blanket so no-one could recognize him. We were flown to Cairo”, says Hayat Dawod Mohamad Al-Qawasmi, born 1941 in Jerusalem, Palestine. Interpreter and photo: Shereen Nanish, Recorded in Amman, Jordan, 2019. Language: English /Arabic
