Here is a business story, that is really a humanitarian story, but overall is an incredible story of drive I believe you’ll be inspired and equipped by. The story would make a great movie, and since my guest actually roomed with Matt Damon in college, it just might become one. James Rhee’s parents migrated to America from Korea. James was driven to excel and please his parents, so he got into Harvard. But he really wanted to teach, so he then taught high school for a couple years. Some of his most rewarding years he says. But then he went back to Harvard and graduated from law school. But he realized he didn’t want to be a lawyer so he became an investment banker. He did well, but realized he didn’t want to do that either. So he worked in private equity. He did well. Very well. He appreciated helping businesses, but didn’t like how disconnected he was from everything. So he quit and didn’t know what to do. Then he ends up in an unlikely place - as CEO of Ashley Stewart, a fashion retailer that served plus-size, predominantly middle- and lower-income Black women. And the company was at its end. The death knell had sounded. James came in for what was supposed to be six months because he felt an obligation to help. He ended up there for seven years with a miracle turnaround story that he’s now described in a book called Red Helicopter: Lead Change With Kindness. We continue our series on Happierness with happiness researcher and evangelist Arthur Brooks. This is part two where we go behind the scenes to find out What Drives Arthur in his personal life as he strives to practice what he preaches. I appreciate that Arthur is up front with the fact that he’s not naturally prone to be in a so-called, happy state. He must proactively work at it. Me too. Arthur again is a Harvard Professor, a columnist at The Atlantic, a very in demand speaker, and author of 12 books. I had him on the show in 2023 for his book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. The message in that book continues to influence me. This time he’s back with his new book co authored with Oprah Winfrey, titled, Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. Arthur is a very intentional person and deeply considers all areas of his life. When I asked him about his values regarding his career he spoke to his efforts to stay aware of the why of what he does as opposed to just the what. In his pursuit of health I found it interesting that he cited he’s not necessarily happy to be exercising, but it helps him be less unhappy overall. Death gets us serious about what is really important, and this is a message she wants to communicate to everyone, and it’s a message I feel is worthy of communicating. More than worthy. I believe it’s the key, literally, to how you can most tangibly change the world and impact it for the better. My mom is Joanne Miller. She prides herself most on being Mom to myself, my brother Jared, and sister Ashley. And then grandmother to her 16 grandkids and 4, soon to be 5, great grandkids. She is well known as wife and partner to my Dad, Dan Miller, of 48 Days To The Work & Life You Love fame. She is also mother figure and friend to countless people. Those roles are top of the list. Further down, yet quite impressive, she is author of two books, Be Your Finest Art and Creating A Haven Of Peace. This is a What Drives Your Health episode. Your health comes from what you do and don’t eat, and what exercise you do and don’t do. And good sleep. Basically your lifestyle. Add to that your genetics and we have it pretty much covered, right? But what about your thinking? Not your mental state, but your actual thinking? Can you think yourself healthy? Or unhealthy? I’m with my great friend, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and he and I have been studying this concept for a long time. A book we read cites a study where people worked out their biceps, with dumbbells. But half of the test subjects were tasked with just thinking about growing their bicep. The first group using dumbbells, grew their biceps. They measured bigger. The second group who just thought about it, also, got bigger biceps. Not as much as the actual dumbbell lifters, but take the measuring tape, and sure enough...they got bigger biceps just from thinking about it. Now take that to your health. As you’ll hear in this show, I talk about an injury I have. The only mental input I give it is...negative. I think about the pain and the lack. According to this study I could be helping heal it with my thoughts, but currently I’m making it worse. Let’s talk about how to use some thinking exercises to increase our health.
