Fertility & Parenthood: The male role for achieving equality

Fertility & Parenthood: The male role for achieving equality

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode deals with discussions of in/fertility and/or baby loss.

--
For some people, the best or preferred route to parenthood is surrogacy; but how does this work, especially for a gay male couple with demanding work lives?

Paul Morgan-Bentley is head of investigations for The Times who has created his family through surrogacy and egg donation with his husband Robin, having already considered adoption. They now have a son called Solly.

In this episode, Paul talks to Natalie and Emma (Somaya wasn’t able to join us for this episode) about opting for surrogacy as a gay man and what employers can do to help things run smoothly for their employees on a similar path to parenthood.

They asked Paul how he navigated this path to parenthood and how his employers at The Times responded when he revealed his own news and how his employer supported him.

They also discussed Paul’s book, The Equal Parent, which not only discusses Paul’s route to parenthood, but also the gender stereotypes he and Robin faced and how challenging these stereotypes and myths around parenting roles to achieve parenting equality will benefit mothers, fathers, and their children.

Guest bio: Paul Morgan-Bentley is Head of Investigations at The Times and specialises in undercover work and in-depth reporting. He is also a gay father through egg donation and surrogacy and the author of The Equal Parent, which explores myths around gendered parenting roles and advocates for men properly sharing responsibility for caring for their children.
