First Lieutenant Edward Rickenbacker: America’s Greatest Flying Ace of World War 1

Edward Rickenbacker, was born on October 8, 1890, in Columbus Ohio. He enlisted in the military on May 25, 1917, joining the Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps and being assigned to the Aviation Section. He became America's greatest flying ace of WW1, credited with 26 confirmed aerial victories. His remarkable achievements led to him receiving the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery in attacking a formation of five German planes, downing two of them. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross multiple times for his courageous actions in combat. During World War II, Rickenbacker served as a non-military observer, and embarked on a mission in October 1942, to inspect bases in the Pacific and deliver a secret message from the president, to General Douglas MacArthur. Tragically, his plane suffered navigational instrument damage and ran out of fuel over the ocean, crashing in to the sea. Rickenbacker and his crew were lost at sea for nearly one month. After enduring immense hardships, Rickenbacker and the surviving crew members were finally rescued.
