Cpl. Thomas A. Pope

Thomas A. Pope was born on December 15, 1894, in Chicago, Illinois. He joined the Illinois National Guard before the United States entered World War I. On July 4, 1918, at the Battle of Hamel, France, Pope's company was advancing behind the tanks, when they were counterattacked by German soldiers at a hill known as "Wolfsberg." Joint Australian and American forces eventually halted the counterattack. As the Allied forces pursued the retreating Germans, they encountered a hostile machine-gun nest that brought them to a stop. Pope charged forward alone and used his bayonet to eliminate several enemy crew members. Taking a stand over the gun, he engaged Germans attempting to recapture it with his rifle until reinforcements arrived and captured them. Listen to his story, here....
