Special Episode: Social Determinants of Health Symposium and Clinical Care Commission Report to Congress

Welcome to episode no. 14, a very special episode of Diabetes Care "On Air"—a new and different way to bring the research published in Diabetes Care to life. Join co-hosts Alice Cheng, MD, FRCPC, and Michael Rickels, MD, MS, along with special guests Dr. Stephanie Fitzpatrick and Dr. Seth Berkowitz, for an examination of the 2023 Diabetes Care Symposium, the 2023 Clinical Care Commission Report to Congress, and the life and achievements of Dr. Felicia Hill-Briggs.

0:38: Mike introduces the guests for this special episode, Drs. Stephanie Fitzpatrick and Dr. Seth Berkowitz. Alice announces that she and Mike are dedicating this special episode to the memory of Dr. Felicia Hill-Briggs, who passed away on 23 June 2023. Dr. Fitzpatrick, who did her postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Hill-Briggs, remembers Dr. Hill-Briggs for her professional achievements and her collaborative and thoughtful approach to research.

3:00: Mike talks with Dr. Fitzpatrick about the symposium article that she coauthored with Dr. Hill-Briggs, "Overview of Social Determinants of Health in the Development of Diabetes." This study is from the Diabetes Care Symposium that appears in the September 2023 issue, and it is openly accessible at https://doi.org/10.2337/dci23-0001. The entire collection of Diabetes Care Symposium articles is openly accessible at https://diabetesjournals.org/collection/1803/Diabetes-Care-Symposium-2023.

6:00: Alice interviews Dr. Berkowitz, lead author of the Diabetes Care Symposium article "Three Lessons About Diabetes and the Social Determinants of Health," which was also presented at the Diabetes Care Symposium and appeared in the September 2023 issue of Diabetes Care. It is openly accessible at https://doi.org/10.2337/dci23-0045. Alice and Dr. Berkowitz also discuss the article by Levi et al. that was presented at the symposium, "Food Insecurity and Diabetes: Overview of Intersections and Potential Dual Solutions." This article is also openly accessible at https://doi.org/10.2337/dci23-0002.

13:20: Mike and Dr. Fitzpatrick discuss the final article in the Diabetes Care Symposium on SDOH, "The Impact of Neighborhoods on Diabetes Risk and Outcomes: Centering Health Equity," by Mujahid et al. This article is openly accessible at https://doi.org/10.2337/dci23-0003.

18:20: Alice brings up the Clinical Care Commission Report to Congress, which appeared as a special article collection in the February 2023 issue of Diabetes Care.
