Non Americans, How Was 9/11 Displayed in Your Country?

Americans watched in horror as the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, left nearly 3,000 people dead in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 20 years later, they watched in sorrow as the nation’s military mission in Afghanistan – which began less than a month after 9/11 – came to a bloody and chaotic conclusion.

A devastating emotional toll, a lasting historical legacy
Shock, sadness, fear, anger: The 9/11 attacks inflicted a devastating emotional toll on Americans. But as horrible as the events of that day were, a 63% majority of Americans said they couldn’t stop watching news coverage of the attacks.

Chart shows days after 9/11, nearly all Americans said they felt sad; most felt depressed
Our first survey following the attacks went into the field just days after 9/11, from Sept. 13-17, 2001. A sizable majority of adults (71%) said they felt depressed, nearly half (49%) had difficulty concentrating and a third said they had trouble sleeping.

It was an era in which television was still the public’s dominant news source – 90% said they got most of their news about the attacks from television, compared with just 5% who got news online – and the televised images of death and destruction had a powerful impact. Around nine-in-ten Americans (92%) agreed with the statement, “I feel sad when watching TV coverage of the terrorist attacks.” A sizable majority (77%) also found it frightening to watch – but most did so anyway.

Americans were enraged by the attacks, too. Three weeks after 9/11, even as the psychological stress began to ease somewhat, 87% said they felt angry about the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Fear was widespread, not just in the days immediately after the attacks, but throughout the fall of 2001. Most Americans said they were very (28%) or somewhat (45%) worried about another attack. When asked a year later to describe how their lives changed in a major way, about half of adults said they felt more afraid, more careful, more distrustful or more vulnerable as a result of the attacks.

Even after the immediate shock of 9/11 had subsided, concerns over terrorism remained at higher levels in major cities – especially New York and Washington – than in small towns and rural areas. The personal impact of the attacks also was felt more keenly in the cities directly targeted: Nearly a year after 9/11, about six-in-ten adults in the New York (61%) and Washington (63%) areas said the attacks had changed their lives at least a little, compared with 49% nationwide. This sentiment was shared by residents of other large cities. A quarter of people who lived in large cities nationwide said their lives had changed in a major way – twice the rate found in small towns and rural areas.

The impacts of the Sept. 11 attacks were deeply felt and slow to dissipate. By the following August, half of U.S. adults said the country “had changed in a major way” – a number that actually increased, to 61%, 10 years after the event.

A year after the attacks, in an open-ended question, most Americans – 80% – cited 9/11 as the most important event that had occurred in the country during the previous year. Strikingly, a larger share also volunteered it as the most important thing that happened to them personally in the prior year (38%) than mentioned other typical life events, such as births or deaths. Again, the personal impact was much greater in New York and Washington, where 51% and 44%, respectively, pointed to the attacks as the most significant personal event over the prior year.

15 years after 9/11 – the attacks continued to be seen as one of the public’s top historical events
Just as memories of 9/11 are firmly embedded in the minds of most Americans old enough to recall the attacks, their historical importance far surpasses other events in people’s lifetimes. In a survey conducted by Pew Research Center in association with A+E Networks’ HISTORY in 2016 – 15 years after 9/11 – 76% of adults named the Sept. 11 attacks as one of the 10 historical events of their lifetime that had the greatest impact on the country. The election of Barack Obama as the first Black president was a distant second, at 40%.

The importance of 9/11 transcended age, gender, geographic and even political differences. The 2016 study noted that while partisans agreed on little else that election cycle, more than seven-in-ten Republicans and Democrats named the attacks as one of their top 10 historic events.

Moments After Executing His 3 Sons

Moments After Executing His 3 SonsAn Ohio man is facing murder charges after allegedly lining up his three young sons — ages 7, 4 and 3 — and shooting them execution-style, authorities said. One of the boys tried to flee but Chad Doerman allegedly told police he “hunted him down” and shot him, authorities said.Deputies attempted CPR but the children died at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. The children’s mother, 34, who has not been publicly identified, was allegedly shot in the hand while trying to protect her boys from the gunshots, prosecutors said on Friday at Doerman’s arraignment. She was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies met with her in the hospital to tell her that her sons had been killed. Doerman was arrested without incident and taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning. He has since been charged with three counts of aggravated murder and is being held on $20 million bond.True Crime Podcast 2023 Police Interrogations, 911 Calls True Police Stories PodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/darkest-mysteries-online-the-strange-and-unusual-podcast-2024--5684156/support.

Military Officer Serial Killer Russell Williams - Police Interrogation and Confession SHOCKING

Military Officer Serial Killer Russell Williams - Police Interrogation and Confession SHOCKING

Military Officer Serial Killer Russell Williams - Police Interrogation and Confession SHOCKINGBob McKeown deconstructs the interrogation and shocking confession of Russell Williams. From his initial denial to the full declaration of guilt, the fifth estate deciphers one of the most compelling and distressing confessions in Canadian criminal history with the help of people who know the art of interrogation better than anyone else. Investigation and arrestJessica Lloyd, 27, had vanished on January 28, 2010. Investigators identified distinctive tire tracks left in snow near her home. One week after her disappearance, the Ontario Provincial Police conducted an extensive canvassing of all motorists using the highway near her home from 7 pm on February 4, 2010, to 6 am on the following day, looking for the unusual tire treads. Williams was driving his Pathfinder that day — rather than the BMW he usually drove — and an officer noticed the resemblance of his tire treads. These were subsequently matched to the treads near Lloyd's home.On February 7, 2010, the CFB Trenton base commander was at his newly built home in Ottawa, where his wife lived full-time and he lived part-time, when he was called by the OPP in Ottawa and asked to come in for questioning. During the 10-hour interview he confessed to the numerous crimes of which he was later convicted. Early the next morning Williams led investigators to the woman's body in a secluded area on Cary Road, about 13 minutes away from where he lived. Williams was also charged in the death of Corporal Marie-France Comeau, a 37-year-old military flight attendant based at CFB Trenton, who had been found dead inside her home in late November 2009.Along with the murder charges, Williams was charged with breaking and entering, forcible confinement, and the sexual assault of two other women in connection with two separate home invasions near Tweed, Ontario in September 2009. According to reports, the women had been bound in their homes and the attacker had taken photos of them.Williams was arraigned and remanded into custody on Monday, February 8, 2010. The Canadian Forces announced that day that an interim commander would soon be appointed to replace him (Dave Cochrane took over 11 days later), and removed his biography from the Department of National Defence website the following day.Hours after the announcement of Williams' arrest, police services across the country reopened unsolved homicide cases involving young women in areas where Williams, a career military man, had previously been stationed. According to news reports, police began looking at other unsolved cases based on a full statement that Williams gave to police.A week after his arrest, investigators reported that, along with hidden keepsakes and other evidence they had found in his home, they had matched a print from one of the homicide scenes to his boot.In addition to the four primary incidents, the investigation into Williams includes probes into 48 cases of theft of women's underwear dating back to 2006. In the searches of his Ottawa home, police discovered stolen lingerie that was neatly stored, catalogued, and concealed. In April 2010, Williams was placed on suicide watch after he tried to kill himself by wedging a stuffed cardboard toilet paper roll down his throat.ConfessionOn February 7, 2010, Williams was interrogated at Ottawa Police Service headquarters by Detective Sergeant Jim Smyth, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police's Behavioural Sciences Unit. The interview started at 3 p.m. and by 7:45 p.m. he was describing his crimes. The interrogation lasted approximately ten hours. Excerpts of the confession were shown in court at Williams' sentencing hearing on October 20, 2010.In the confession, Williams gave details of his crimes, including the sexual assaults in Tweed and 82 break-ins and thefts. Some of them occurred in Ottawa homes within walking distance of his Orleans, Ontario home where he lived with his wife. Other break-ins and thefts occurred in Belleville, and in Tweed, where the couple had had a cottage since 2004.He also told police where they could find evidence, including hidden keepsakes, inside the Ottawa home. The couple had moved to a new house two months before he was interrogated by police. He told Detective Sergeant Jim Smyth where police could find the thousands of images he took of Lloyd and Comeau and the two women he sexually assaulted. He then identified on a map where he dumped Lloyd’s body. A video of the interrogation was made available to the public and was posted online by several newspapers and on YouTube.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/darkest-mysteries-online-the-strange-and-unusual-podcast-2024--5684156/support.

The Bever Family Massacre: 911 Call and Police Interrogation.

The Bever Family Massacre: 911 Call and Police Interrogation.

The Bever Family Massacre: 911 Call and Police Interrogation.Teen Brothers Wanted To Become Famous Killers — And They Started By Butchering Their FamilyRobert and Michael Bever thought they would kill their family quickly, like ninjas, before embarking on a cross-country murder spree. For the teenaged Bever brothers, the goal was notoriety. They wanted to have articles written about them. They wanted to be feared. They wanted to kill 500 people, believing the act would make them like gods. Unfortunately for the family of Robert, 18, and Michael, 16, the brothers kicked off their plan at home. On the night of July 22, 2015, they broke out knives they had been stashing, and set about trying to kill each of the seven other members of their household in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. They planned to cut their family down like ninjas, with swift and silent killing blows — all while awaiting a shipment of ammunition, according to authorities on “Killer Siblings” on Oxygen. A bloody, messy reality set in quickly, however, when the boys went after their first victim, 13-year-old Crystal. As one of the Bever boys would later tell police, “It wasn’t like it was on the TV — you cut them once and they die.” After Michael lured his sister into a bedroom under the pretense of showing her something on a computer, Robert grabbed her from behind and slashed her throat. Crystal fought back, and he plunged his knife into her abdomen and arms. The boys’ mother, April, 44, heard the commotion and came upstairs. She was met by Robert, who unleashed a frenzy of at least 48 knife strikes that resulted in “more wounds than I’ve ever seen in any body, ever,” according to one investigator. All the while, somehow, Crystal crawled away to try to protect her younger siblings. The brothers then moved on, room by room. Father David Bever, 52, was stabbed 28 times, and suffered blunt force injuries all over his body, Tulsa World reported. Michael later told police that Robert stabbed their dad with “the biggest knife he had,” according to “Killer Siblings.” Their 7-year-old brother, Christopher, was stabbed six times. When they overtook their younger sister Victoria, 18, they stabbed her 18 times in both sides of her neck, chest, back and upper arm. Daniel, 12, managed to lock himself in a room, where he called 911. Michael managed to convinced his younger brother to open the door by feigning that he was also being attacked by Robert. The brothers came in and stabbed the boy nine times in the back, shoulder and chest. Robert then returned his attention to Crystal, who was bleeding from her neck, arm and abdominal wounds, and tried to finish her off by suffocation. The older brother also planned to cut off his 2-year-old sister, Autumn’s, head, according to local outlet Oklahoma News on 6. At that moment, however, police began banging on the front door. Detective Brett Burton of the Broken Arrow Police Department told producers that when he responded to the call, he could see blood on the sidewalk and the front step, and he heard a faint “help me” coming from inside. It was Crystal. The 13-year-old clung to life, telling police that her brothers had attacked her family. Autumn remained sleeping upstairs, unharmed, throughout the whole ordeal. The brothers escaped out the back of the home, but they were quickly tracked down by a police K-9 in a wooded area. In police photos featured on “Killer Siblings,” Robert and Michael Bever are covered in mud and blood; their clothes are torn and even appear to have bits of flesh on them. “They weren’t upset. They weren’t distraught,” Burton said. “It’s almost like they had a sense of cockiness.” “It looked to me like [one of the boys] had a smirk on his face,” Corporal Leon Calhoun told local ABC affiliate KTUL.The Bever Family Massacre 911 Call and Police Interrogation.True Crime Podcast 2023 Police Interrogations, 911 Calls True Police Stories PodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/darkest-mysteries-online-the-strange-and-unusual-podcast-2024--5684156/support.
