Prior to the 1929 stock market crash, a race was on to build the tallest building in the world in New York City. Of all the proposed buildings, one pushed through the depression and took the title of the tallest building in the world and held on to it for forty years. Even though it has since been surpassed in height, it still remains the iconic building of the New York skyline.
