Stepping Back to Find What Works with Medical Director of VEG Denver, Dr. Kerri Nelson

Stepping Back to Find What Works with Medical Director of VEG Denver, Dr. Kerri Nelson

Sometimes you have be willing to pause, reflect, and take a step back to find what works best for you.

And this episode's guest is a testament to that line of action.

Dr. Kerri Nelson grew up in Denver, Colorado. She is a graduate of Kansas State University and completed a rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. She initially started down the path toward becoming a criticalist, but made the difficult decision to leave a critical care program in New York after 6 months. She moved back to Denver and fortunately was able to reconnect with her love for emergency medicine.

After working at a large specialty hospital in a Denver suburb for 2 years, she joined “ Veterinary Emergency Group” in 2019. She is currently the Medical Director of VEG Denver, which opened in September of 2020.

Dr. Nelson loves managing critical cases, especially sepsis, metabolic and acid-base derangements, and polytrauma. She is passionate about teaching, and loves working for a company that gives her the opportunity to train newly graduated veterinarians.

In our conversation with Dr. Nelson, we cover:

  • Making the difficult decision of leaving the critical care program in New York after 6 months
  • Overcoming challenging work environments and doubters - was told she'd never get a job if leave.
  • The power of positive mentorship
  • How VEG is leading the new frontier of client-focused veterinary clinics, where owners can see and be involved in everything
  • The role of a Medical Director at an emergency clinic

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Nelson can be found running marathons, skiing, riding horses, reading books on leadership and personal growth, and spending lots of time with family and friends.
