JUR-ED EPISODE 6: Systemic Racism against Indigenous people in Thunder Bay

JUR-ED is a podcast of the Jur-Ed Foundation, put out on a monthly basis. The aim is to promote education of legal rights and the practice of law, and this is done by looking at systems, structures, and social relations.

On December 12, 2018, the Office of the Independent Review Director (OIPRD) released a 206-page systemic review report on the relationship between the Thunder Bay Police Service and indigenous communities. It found systemic racism exists at an institutional level in TBPS and made 44 recommendations including the reopening of nine sudden death cases involving indigenous victims where there were significant deficiencies with the investigations.

In this podcast, you will hear from a panel of four people who were active participants in the creation of the investigation itself. First you will hear from the author, Gerry McNeilly. Then, two lawyers who worked on the review as well as extensively in Thunder Bay, Meaghan Daniel and Julian Falconer. Finally we will hear from author and Journalist, Tanya Talaga. The panel will discuss the genesis of the investigation, the Report and its recommendations. More importantly, the discussion will adopt lessons learned which can benefit the legal profession in its relationship with indigenous peoples in all aspects in which lawyers and paralegals practice.
