Listener Q&A:

Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com!

====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"] ======================================

Rishon has a call in question about whether oats have gluten.

Craig asks: I'm looking for a gluten free cereal that I can just dump in my cereal bowl in the morning. I am adding blueberries and almonds to my cereal now. Ben has a call-in question about using glucosamine or Capraflex for recovering from an acute injury vs. using for chronic inflammation, and whether glucosamine chondroitin should be used long term.

Christy asks: I just listened to episode 127 where you interviewed Udo Erasmus. What is the temperature where you start to damage saturated fats? Udo mentioned not heating fats to "frying temperatures", but I'm not sure what that means. Is it safer to bake meat, what about boiling it? Is the temperature of boiling water too high? Or steam? I believe the temperature of steam is higher than that of boiling water. I think deep fat fryers work at about 350 degrees, which is baking temperature as well, so is baking as bad as frying?

Here is an oil smoke point chart.

Jenn asks: I have a question about night-time leg cramps.

For the past few weeks, I have been wakened several times a night with extremely painful spasms in my calves (mostly soleus), shins, and feet (both the tops and bottoms). They subside somewhat when I get up and stretch, but are a serious disturbance to my sleep and leave me achy and tired in the morning. I am a fit 38-year-old, and a former marathoner. I'm a daily commuter cyclist (about 45 - 90 minutes daily). I work out at the gym 3-5 days a week at a fairly high intensity, and do 2-3 yoga classes a week. My hydration and potassium intake are good. Other than somewhat increased cycling (clipped in for the first time this season), I haven't made any serious changes to my training. I have in the last 6 months switched to a diet lower in carbohydrate and have dropped about 10 pounds in that time, but my BMI is still a healthy 20.1.

The only other time I've had cramps like this was when I was anorexic and quite underweight a number of years ago, but I'm sure that my caloric intake is adequate now (usually around 1200 - 1400). It does make me wonder, though, if it could be a particular nutritional deficiency that could be causing these cramps? (I don't think it's my pedals since I've had them since May and only started having these in the last month or so.)

In my response to Jenn, I recommend she check out the magnesium http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#naturalcalm and also this topical magnesium.

Komal asks: Just wanted to ask which milk us better for us? 2% or 1%.

Jeff asks: I'm a keen age grouper triathlete and have recently been diagnosed with osteitis pubis. Initial scans detected a small inguinal hernia but further investigation revealed OP which is what us causing me grief in the groin region. I've been advised to lay off running for 2 months but can swim and cycle. Do you have any advice to aid my recovery? Should I avoid kicking drills when swimming? Is walking ok?

Paul asks: What are your thoughts on PEMF?

The Little-Known Physical Therapy Method That Can Stop Injuries In Their Tracks, Fix Fascia & Amplify Your Recovery & Performance: Counterstrain

The Little-Known Physical Therapy Method That Can Stop Injuries In Their Tracks, Fix Fascia & Amplify Your Recovery & Performance: Counterstrain

When I interviewed Tony Robbins and Peter Diamandis in the episode "Tony Robbins, Peter Diamandis & Ben Greenfield Reveal New Anti-Aging Biohacks & Breakthroughs in Precision Medicine You’ve Never Heard Of Before.", we discussed a special form of injury and recovery physical therapy called "Counterstrain", which was also featured in Tony's book Lifeforce and is a cutting edge manual therapy technique that provides relief from pain and dysfunction. I was so interested in this protocol that I had one of the leaders in the Counterstrain movement - Tim Hodges - fly to my house to do a treatment on me. It was like nothing I've ever experienced, so I hosted Tim on this podcast to delve into exactly what Counterstrain is, who it's for, and what it does exactly. Tim Hodges has worked in the field of physical rehabilitation since 1996. He is involved in the ongoing development of the Counterstrain technique and the creation of training programs renowned for producing highly skilled Counterstrain Practitioners. In 2003, Tim started his private practice, now called Counterstrain Portland. A Teaching Assistant since 2003 and Facial Counterstrain Instructor for the Jones Institute since 2014, he is one of a select few certified to teach the modern version of Counterstrain. He has helped Brian Tuckey develop many of the Counterstrain techniques used today. Tim continues to apply his expertise in the field through private treatment at Counterstrain Portland, the mentoring of Healthcare Practitioners at the Counterstrain Academy and by teaching large-scale continuing education seminars for health care providers. Tim created counterstrain.com, the Counterstrain brand and along with Brian Tuckey created 3D Counterstrain. The 3 Most Important & Effective Sleep Ingredients To *Finally* Get The Full, Restful Night Of Sleep Your Body & Brain Craves

The 3 Most Important & Effective Sleep Ingredients To *Finally* Get The Full, Restful Night Of Sleep Your Body & Brain Craves

Angelo Keely is the co-founder and CEO of Kion, a performance and longevity supplement and functional food company dedicated to helping people fully experience a joyful, active life by providing pure, energy-enhancing solutions. Angelo Keely, along with yours truly, first started Kion in 2017 with a dream of creating something that motivated people to continue on their personal health journeys. Since 2017, Angelo has taken part in helping to develop many of the highest-possible quality supplements on the market, cultivated an incredibly passionate team, and has helped fuel the growth of Kion. Angelo was born to hippie parents in Austin, Texas, and raised in an old, funky, hand-built house nestled in the outer regions of the suburbs. They were health-nut pescatarians. He didn’t have a birth certificate or see a doctor until he was six. He didn’t have his first haircut until the summer before fourth grade. So, as you can imagine, he got very comfortable being “weird” at an early age. He then had a series of traumatic accidents in his adolescence and early adulthood. Nearly stabbed and beaten to death at 16, he left home and became independent at 17, and was then involved in a deadly bus accident in the foothills of the Himalayas at 21. These events gifted him with the confidence to navigate all situations and a profound appreciation for simply existing. Angelo spent several years working in Europe and India in his 20s. Thanks to this experience (and a lot of talking out loud to himself), he now speaks multiple languages. He was drawn to these experiences because he loves to see things, and himself, from new perspectives and he's enthralled by the challenge of understanding new systems. Angelo is also a multi-instrumentalist and loves to make music with unique variations of vocals, drums, piano, and guitar. How Two Middle-Aged Entrepreneurial Parents Completely Transformed & Biohacked Their Health, Fitness, Sex Life & More

How Two Middle-Aged Entrepreneurial Parents Completely Transformed & Biohacked Their Health, Fitness, Sex Life & More

For a while now, I've been working with an entrepreneurial couple named Jim and Jamie Sheils to improve their fitness, health, nutrition, and longevity... ...and we've become dear friends in the process. Jim and Jamie Sheils are the fit, sexy parents of four children ranging in age from toddler to teen. They are also the founders of a fantastic company called 18 Summers, which refers to the number of summers you have with your children. The goal of 18 Summers is to help support families with a formula for lifelong parent-child connection, trust, bonding, respect, and experience. Jim and Jamie have also authored the popular ebook The Family Board Meeting, which outlines three simple steps parents can take to create lasting connections with their children. Jim Sheils is an entrepreneur who consults with world-class organizations such as Harvard University and Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) to help their members succeed at home. In keynote presentations, workshops, team events, and private consulting, Jim has helped hundreds of the top entrepreneurs and thought leaders around the world focus and implement where it really counts, at home. He is affectionately known as "Crazy Glue For Families." Jamie Sheils founded Florida’s only Waldorf-inspired public charter school and directed a Public Montessori Charter School. She has also developed and implemented programs in several other public and private schools. When Jim and Jamie first met, they found themselves facing interesting challenges as a blended family. Suddenly, they had to contend with the everyday trials of disconnection and time scarcity. It was Family Board Meetings that bridged the gap, helping a new family connect, and helping the kids find sure footing on uncertain ground. Now, through 18 Summers, Jim and Jamie reach families and organizations around the world, helping them discover the benefits of quality time and enduring relationships. In this episode, we talk about homeschooling, creative freedom, sex drive, and even (how to avoid!) "Dad bod." Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering

Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering

I recently read a book entitled Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering by Kate J. Stockly and Wesley J. Wildman. It was a thrilling read on the merging of biohacking technologies, spirituality, neurotheology, and much more.  Technology now has the ability to modify and control the spiritual experience. This book is a journey through the high-tech aids for psychological growth that are changing the world while exploring safety, authenticity, and ethics. Of course, technology is already helping to manage health, sleep, relationships, and finances, so it’s no surprise that technological aids for the spiritual journey would be the next frontier. From apps that help you pray or meditate, to cybernauts seeking the fast track, to nirvana through magnetic brain stimulation, this is the brink of the most transformative revolution in the practice of religion: an era in which the power of “spirit tech” can be harnessed to deepen your experience of the divine. Spirit tech products are rapidly improving in sophistication and power, and ordinary people need a trustworthy guide. Through their research and insider access to the top innovators and early adopters, Kate Stockly and Wesley Wildman take you deep inside an evolving world with Spirit Tech. The book is the definitive guide to the fascinating world of innovations for personal transformation, spiritual growth, and pushing the boundaries of human nature. When you read Spirit Tech, you'll... ...find out how increasingly popular “wearables” work on your brain, promising a shortcut to transformative meditative states... ...meet the inventor of the “God Helmet,” who developed a tool to increase psychic skills and overcome fear, sadness, and anger... ...visit churches that use ayahuasca as their sacrament and explore the booming industry of psychedelic tourism... ...journey to a mansion in the heart of Silicon Valley where a group of scientists and entrepreneurs are working feverishly to bring brain-based spirit tech applications to the masses, and... ...discover a research team who achieved brain-to-brain communication between individuals thousands of miles apart, harnessing neurofeedback techniques to sync and share emotions among group members. Kate Stockly is an academic researcher specializing in the scientific study of religion and women’s studies in religion. Kate’s first book, High On God: How Megachurches Won the Heart of America (co-authored with James K. Wellman, Jr. and Katie Corcoran; Oxford 2020), looks closely at the affective and emotional dynamics animating evangelical megachurches. Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Engineering Enlightenment is Kate's second book. Kate also analyzes gender dynamics in religion and spirituality from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Putting the critical humanities—especially feminist materialism and affect theory—into conversation with the biological sciences, she theorizes how gender and sex interact with spiritual and religious expression and experience.
