Listener Q&A:

As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Audio Question from John: He just finished a sprint triathlon. He's been swimming all winter and spring but had a panic attack in the water during the race. Hung on to a canoe for the first time in his life. How can he avoid this in the future? How can he calm his mind during the swim.

Audio Question from Terri: She has bowel/bathroom issues during her morning training runs. She eats breakfast, goes to bathroom, walks dogs, goes to the bathroom again, and then again a few more times during the run. She does not have this problem during afternoon and evening runs.

~ In my response to Terri, I mention CapraCleanse and the Squatty Potty.

Audio Question from Abe (sorry... I mean Dave): He has an "Endurance Weekend" race coming up: 5k run on Friday, sprint triathlon Saturday morning, followed by 15 mile time trial. Then after a 3 to 4 hour break, there is a 25 mile road race. On Sunday morning there is a "crit". What would you do training, fueling and recovery for the week of the race?

~ Here is my magnesium oil.

Audio Question from John: John is considering running the ING New York City Marathon. He has run 2 half marathons, goes to gym 4 times a week, and is in good shape (but could lose 5lbs around stomach). Has a slight case of hypermobility syndrome in his knee. After previous half marathons could barely walk for a few days (due to foot pain). He really wants to do a full marathon but doesn't want to break himself.

~ In my response to John, I mention www.marathondominator.com, since it sounds like he's not really doing much weight training.

Greg and Sharon ask: We noticed in one of your videos at home you have a water filtering system. I don't remember the name of it but we looked at it about two years ago and wondered about it (I even contacted the company with my question). When the water is filtered through all of the layers it stays in your container with the filter, right? In other words, you just spent the whole night filtering water, but the filter stays up in the middle of the water after it's filtered. Where did the impurities from the water go?

Scott asks: My daughter is a competitive high school swimmer and also has scoliosis (27% curvature). This has been a great activity for her for the past 12 years and I feel has helped keep her body strong. However, this spring season she has developed a sharp pain on exhaling forcefully or on impact (like diving or pushing off the wall). She has never scratched a race, but now is unable to complete a 100 breaststroke. The pain is localized on her left side (the 'low' side of her spinal curvature) below her scapula in her rhomboid. She's been icing, stretching, using ibuprofen, and electo-stim. Do you have any suggestions on how to rehab the injury and any special considerations for rehab and training given her scoliosis?

~ In my response, I mention the book "Stopping Scoliosis".

Jenell asks: Now, I know this may come off as a weird question, but what is your take on Veggie Straws by Sensible Portions. They seem to be healthy and are all natural with no preservatives but I have my "guard up" so to speak on them because at times what seems healthy for you really isn't. If you could provide your feed back on this it would be greatly appreciated.

~ In my response, I mention my top 5 quick summer fat loss recipes, including kale chips.

Julia asks: I am recovering from a fracture to my tibial plateau and a recently bruised sternum (got a little stupid using a poorly adjusted upright rower @ the gym). Obviously, chest and weight bearing exercise is contraindicated. Do you have any creative exercises to share, particularly ones that can strengthen my lower body in some way.

~ In my response, I mention this article.

Carla asks: I'm very lean, normal BMI/BF% , mother of 3. I exercise 5 x a week (cardio/weights/plyometrics/hiit etc), but after 3 C-sections my abs are not responding and I can't get rid of the excess skin in the lower part of my abs. I am considering a tummy tuck. Is there any other way?

~ In my response to Carla, I mention 14 core exercises for when you're pregnant. I also mention skin firming creams from Green Cupboards.

Gregory says:I weigh 250 lbs and I'm 31 I want to get bigger arms but I want to loose weight, how do I go about doing this without using small weights? I was told that I should just do a bunch of cardio to drop the weight then start lifting. Others have suggested that I do a circuit with a high heart rate, like do some heavy weights then light weights at high rep then some quick cardio. So, how am I supposed to get/maintain some big muscles and trim down to like 225/230?

Beyond Human: How Cutting-Edge Science Is Extending Our Lives.

Beyond Human: How Cutting-Edge Science Is Extending Our Lives.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/beyondhuman Never before in the history of medicine has mankind faced such hope and peril as those of us poised to embrace the radical medical technologies of today. Eve Herold's new book Beyond Human: How Cutting-Edge Science Is Extending Our Lives examines the medical technologies taking shape at the nexus of computing, microelectronics, engineering, nanotechnology, cellular and gene therapies, and robotics. These technologies will dramatically transform our lives and allow us to live for hundreds of years. Yet, with these blessings come complicated practical and ethical issues, some of which we can predict, but many we cannot. Beyond Human taps the minds of doctors, scientists, and engineers engaged in developing a host of new technologies while telling the stories of some of the patients courageously testing the radical new treatments about to come into the market. Beyond Human asks the difficult questions of the scientists and bioethicists who seek to ensure that as our bodies and brains become ever more artificial, we hold onto our humanity. In this new world, will everyone have access to technological miracles, or will we end up living in a world of radical disparities? How will society accommodate life spans that extend into hundreds of years? Will we and our descendants be able to bring about the dream of a future liberated by technology, or will we end up merely serving the machines and devices that keep us healthy, smart, young, and alive? Eve Herold is a science writer specializing in issues at the intersection of science and society. She has written and spoken extensively about stem cell research and regenerative medicine and the social and bioethical aspects of leading-edge medicine. She is the past director of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at the American Psychiatric Association and has served as Director of Public Policy Research and Education for the Genetics Policy Institute. Other positions include Public Education Manager for the Stem Cell Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization promoting biomedical research and education. She is the former managing editor of The Gerontologist, a scholarly journal that explores the many facets of aging and its impact on society. Her 2007 book, Stem Cell Wars, was awarded a Commendation in Popular Medicine by the British Medical Association. Her 2016 book, Beyond Human, has been nominated for the Kirkus Prize in Nonfiction. A new book, Robots and the Women Who Love Them, will be released in 2018. During my discussion with Eve in today's show, you'll discover: -Whether Eve Herold is one of those folks who are striving to live to be 160 or 180 or 200...[6:12] -How a brain pacemaker works and if you should get one installed someday...[6:50] -How to inject your brain with stem cells...[14:10] -Why Ben has banked both his fat marrow stem cells and bone marrow stem cells...[19:25] -What Eve's typical day looks like in terms of anti-aging "techniques" she currently uses...[21:45] -The fascinating current state of organ implantation or organ technology to replace failing organs...[25:10] -The crazy military and DARPA research that is allowing soldiers to function at a high level for more than 168 hours without sleep...[33:25] -How a brain-to-machine interface allows for computers to be controlled with sheer mental power...[40:00] -How nanobots can be used to repair internal proteins and to extend lifespan...[42:30] -What Eve thinks about so-called anti-aging pills like NAD+, resveratrol, metformin, etc...[49:05] -Whether you live longer if you are slightly fat...[58:00] -And much more! How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Repair

How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Repair

This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! In 2011 Cavin Balaster sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that left him comatose with less than a 10% chance of ever regaining consciousness beyond a persistent vegetative state. He didn't eat, walk, or talk for months while he was in the hospital. He was breathing from a tube in his neck, receiving nutrition from a tube in his belly, and his left hand was completely flexed inward. About a year after his injury, he was introduced to a nutritional protocol that helped him begin to regain some clarity. That's when he dove into an intense study of why nutrition made such a difference. For over five years, he has devoted his life to studying metabolism, neurometabolism, mechanisms of neuroplasticity, neuroscience, and nutrition, while reaching out to doctors, researchers, practitioners, and neuroscientists, to learn everything he can to optimize his brain function and to maximize his recovery. Cavin recently released the book How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Repair, which is the culmination of the nutritional tools he has learned through this journey. Cavin wrote this book to share with others the nutritional information that has helped him to regain his brain function. While his recovery has been an astounding example for brain injury survivors, this book is not just for those with neurological conditions - it is for anyone wanting to improve their brains. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The crazy story of Cavin's traumatic brain injury and subsequent diffuse axonal injury (DAI) ...[4:25] -How a brain injury causes a leaky gut, and vice versa...[6:55] -How what Cavin did is very different than the current "standard of care" in modern medicine for TBI...[22:20]  -The relationship between the brain and the eye, and how Cavin fixed his eyes...[27:45] -The importance of neurometabolism...[29:55] - The lesser-known tools Cavin used for rehab and repairing the brain, including choline, DHA and a ketogenic diet...[34:45] -Why Cavin endorses trying 15-20g of fish oil along with choline and uridine...[38:30] -The importance of dessicated organ meats, kelp, dulse...[40:30] -Some of Cavin's favorite books (aside from his own) that he recommends for brain resources...[42:45] -And much more! How To Strip Fat Fast, Single Sets To Failure, CBD Dosing, Boxing For Fitness & More: The Jay Ferruggia Podcast

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/jason Jay Ferruggia has been helping people become the strongest version of themselves since 1994. You may have seen his work in Men’s Health, Muscle & Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Fast Company, Huffington Post, LiveStrong, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Shape, Entrepreneur, Details or on ESPN or CBS. You know how group training is the big thing these days? He was doing that in the mid 90’s. The hardcore, underground warehouse gyms that are so popular nowadays? He had one of those back in ’96. Training like an athlete? Flipping tires, dragging sleds, pressing logs, using rings? He has been doing that for 20+ years with his clients, long before it was popular or on TV commercials. What you may not know is that over the course of his life he's been physically and mentally weak, skinny, fat, sad, depressed, insecure, painfully shy, socially awkward, crippled with anxiety and indecision, struggled with addiction, and have gone broke on more than one occasion. During my discussion with Jay in today's podcast, you'll discover: -What happened to Jay when he didn't touch a weight for 12 weeks in a row and switched to body weight training only...[12:47] -Jay's current strategies for maintaining his body as he ages, and his personal longevity tactics...[16:50] -Jay's top tips for getting in great shape, in just 3-4 hours a week...[28:17] - How Jay monitors his bloodwork, and the diet and supplements he takes...[46:45] -The fastest way to lose fat safely and the best substitute for uphill sprints...[55:55] -How to use single sets to failure for massive fitness responses...[60:27] -And much more... Why You Don't Need To Eat After A Workout [00:26:37] Luke says: I training for a Spartan Super and I was at a talk by a sports physiologist and he kept stressing the need for post-workout carbs. He was saying "1 gram, per kilogram of weight, per hour of training, in the two hours following your workout." He showed some graphs showing how this was the most important time (blah blah blah). I've heard you talk about not eating immediately after. Something to do with HGH or Testosterone. Could you go into a little more detail about if carbs are actually needed? In my response, I recommend: -Kion Aminos How To Find Your Personal Circadian Rhythm [00:39:31] Sheridan says: Circadian Rhythm seems to be a hot theme in most health podcasts these days. What do you suggest is the most efficient way to find your personal circadian rhythm? Is it the Oura ring? Is there more to it than that? How would you find your personal circadian rhythm? In my response, I recommend: -Oura Ring -Power Of When book by Michael Breus -The chronotype quiz -mycircadianclock.org How To Absorb Iron Better [00:48:37] Mia says: I heard Dr Mercola say that turmeric blocks the absorption of iron (and I have low iron and ferritin). I take a fair amount of turmeric. If I take my liver pills at a different time than my turmeric, will that allow the iron to be absorbed better?  In my response, I recommend: -Superhuman Coach Article on how to use turmeric Healthy Breakfast Travel Ideas [00:54:59] Daniel says: I personally consume your signature smoothie every morning and I am wondering what you eat in the morning when making your smoothie is just not an option? The Danger Of 'Shrooms, Eating & Supplementing "Seasonally", Whether Lectins Are Really Bad For You & Much More With Dr. Anthony Beck!

The Danger Of 'Shrooms, Eating & Supplementing "Seasonally", Whether Lectins Are Really Bad For You & Much More With Dr. Anthony Beck!

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/beck2 I have several friends who I would consider to be VIP's, bigwigs, and leading authorities in the field of health and biohacking. Although I will respectfully keep those friends anonymous, I've noted that a relatively large majority of them have one specific man who serves as their personal physician, and he's the same guy who advises some of the world's top military personnel, Spartans, strongmen competitors and obstacle racers. That man is Dr. Anthony Beck, and he's my guest on today's podcast. As a physician who has practiced Functional Medicine for over 20 years and backed by 10’s of thousands of patient encounters, Dr. Anthony G. Beck doesn’t merely manage diseases ~ he helps people resolve them. Dr. Beck has earned 4 national medical board certifications, is the founder and chief medical officer for Balance Protocol Institute, is the founder and CEO of Helion Nutraceuticals and provides philanthropic care for combat veterans through groups such as Warrior Angles Foundation, Millennium TBI Network and Task Force Dagger Foundation. With extensive education in many clinical disciplines such as Functional Medicine, clinical nutrition, systems biology, epigenetics and nutrigenomics, he takes a dynamic approach to assessing, educating, and working with his patients to achieve their highest levels of wellbeing. Dr. Beck’s programs involve a full array of aspects including optimizing ones environment of (air, water, light, sound, EMF), healthful lifestyle design, individualized nutrition, hormone balancing, resolving immune dysfunction, identifying hidden infectious diseases, as well as leveraging extensive laboratory and functional testing to assist patients to determine their biochemical individuality. Even more importantly, Dr. Beck wants to empower patients to demand a higher level of care from their health care providers. So not only is Dr. Beck a wealth of knowledge on advanced health tactics, medical testing, and the combination of biohacking and exercise performance, but he's also the mastermind behind a hydration tactic I've personally been experimenting with: a tiny hydration invention called Oral I.V. - which we explore in great detail in the episode "The Physician Who Personally Advises The World's Leading Health Authorities, And His Tiny Invention That Pro Athletes Swear By." Lately, Dr. Beck has been quite pesky and informative on my own Facebook page - on topics about everything from mushrooms to methylation - so I figured I'd invite him on the show to take a deep dive into some of these controversial topics he has a unique perspective on, including: Psychedelics Lectins Energy Medicine Devices Dietary waters vs pH effect on body EMF devices for health and their consequences During our discussion, you'll discover: -Anthony's fascinating morning routine that includes near infrared, far infrared and photobiomodulation... [00:11:10] -Why Anthony only takes certain supplements during certain seasons, and how he determines that... [00:22:29] -Why Anthony has his Spartan athletes eat differently at different latitudes and why you can eat more fruits and raw vegetables in the spring and summer... [00:30:53] -Why you don't really need to worry about the pH of the water that you drink, and whether carbonated water will really damage your teeth... [00:38:43] -Why Dr. Beck believes the whole Plant Paradox "lectins are bad for you" argument is a bad hypothesis... [00:50:01] -Dr. Beck's favorite self-quantification tests and why... [00:51:19] -The reason Dr. Beck doesn't use cannabidiol based on the RS1135840 and RS1065852... [00:58:00] -All the damage that Dr. Beck has seen 'shrooms do and the damage they can cause... [01:02:32] -How Dr. Beck personally mitigates the effects of EMF, and why he isn't a fan of "EMF" blockers... [01:14:00] -And much more! The Myth About "Grounding", Acupuncture Without Needles, 400% Increase In Stem Cell Production & Much More.

The Myth About "Grounding", Acupuncture Without Needles, 400% Increase In Stem Cell Production & Much More.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/pawluk Having healthy cells is not a passive process. Active, regular tuning-up of our cells is not only feasible, but also necessary to slow aging and reduce the risk of cell dysfunction. We are, after all, only as healthy as our cells. Imperceptible cell dysfunction that is not corrected early can lead to disease. Some claim that fine-tuning of the cells can be done daily in only minutes, using something called "pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs)". So I figured I'd turn to an expert to find out whether or not this is really true. Dr. William Pawluk, MD, MSc, my guest on today's show, is a holistic doctor near Baltimore, MD. Previous academic positions at Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland. He is trained in acupuncture, homeopathy, hypnosis, and bodywork. He is considered the foremost authority on the use of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy in North America, and has just completed a comprehensive book on healing with magnetic fields called “Power Tools for Health”. This book describes what magnetic fields are, over 25 actions of magnetic fields in the body, how they work for over 50 health conditions, how to get one and how to use it. This is supported by over 500 scientific references and is the most authoritative, yet readable, book on the topic available to date. To help promote this healing concept, he has well over 50 radio, podcast, magazine and TV interviews combined. He has also been a co-host of a 2-hour holistic health radio show in Baltimore for 10 years. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Ben wore a PEMF called the "Flexpulse" on his butt during the whole podcast... [00:05:55] -The difference between harmful EMF and beneficial PEMF... [00:11:32] -NASA discovered about a 400% increase in neural stem cells and turned on about 160 genes that control growth and regeneration... [00:17:14] -The fascinating effects of electric fields on circadian rhythmicity and jet lag (and which frequency you would want to use)... [00:19:18] -Which PEMF frequency is best for increasing circulation and decreasing inflammation... [00:24:24] -Dr. Pawluk's favorite frequency for rapidly inducing sleep... [00:31:38] -Why it's a myth that the earth produces a frequency of 7.8Hz... [00:36:57] -Whether it is true that certain body functions, cells or organs respond to specific frequencies... [00:49:30] -Which frequency is best for depression... [00:54:20] -Why you may want to consider using calcium and magnesium if you are doing PEMF... [00:57:18] -What kind of "biohacks" or other modalities Dr. Pawluk likes to combine with PEMF... [01:02:02] -And much more! How To Avoid Distractions During Meditation [00:19:50] Jeanne says: I am wanting to stop my brain thinking, and actually surrender my thoughts, during meditation. I find my thoughts impact me way too much. I am wondering what you would do (or music you would recommend) for me to attain a higher high state of consciousness? In my response, I recommend: -Lovetuner audio tracks -Wholetones by Michael Tyrell -Life, Love & Lullabies by Michael Tyrell -Sleepstream App -Brain.FM -Essential oils such as vanilla, peppermint, rosemary and cinnamon to assist with focus -3 Ways to Increase Your Focus During Meditation -The Qualia "God Pill" Two Effective Recovery Biohacks [00:32:51] Leslie says: I am looking at investing in either a BioMat or a Normatec. I usually run 3-4 days a week and am prepping for a 15-mile race. I don't know how much anti-inflammatory effect the Biomat would have vs. the Normatec but I would love to hear your thoughts on this, please. Any other suggestions? In my response, I recommend: -The Biomat -Normatec boots -Video: How to turn a Biomat into a sauna How Much Sugar Do Kids Need [00:41:17] Tim says: I have 3 kids who are very active but a few years, we all switched over to a more clean eating diet. That means my kids don't get processed foods or sugar. I am wondering does the sugar really matter for kids? How much sugar is ok for kids? Should I let them eat some processed food and snacks? As high energy as they are, would they burn it off? My kids seem to be shorter than the other kids (maybe genetics) but I want to make sure I am raising my kids to be the best little superhumans they can be. In my response, I recommend: -Blackstrap molasses - USE OUR THRIVE LINK MARGE -Raw honey - USE OUR THRIVE LINK MARGE -Organic maple syrup - USE OUR THRIVE LINK MARGE -Dates/figs - USE OUR THRIVE LINK MARGE -Ben Lynch's book Dirty Genes -Robb Wolf's book Wired to Eat How To Fix Plantar Fasciitis [00:55:49] Glen says: I used to be an avid runner and never had any trouble with injuries but then I got a desk job and gained about 20lbs and developed a case of plantar fasciitis. It has lasted for years now and I only ever get relief for a few days before it flares up again even just from walking (I haven't been able to run for years). I have tried everything (compression, ice, relaxing, foot braces, night support, heel cushions, anti-inflammatory diets) but I am hoping you have a suggestion that I haven't tried. In my response, I recommend: -High-load strength training improves outcome in patients with plantar fasciitis -My article on TB-500 -My article on BPC-157 -Flexpulse -Plantar Fasciitis | Feat.
