Listener Q&A:

As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Audio Question from John: He just finished a sprint triathlon. He's been swimming all winter and spring but had a panic attack in the water during the race. Hung on to a canoe for the first time in his life. How can he avoid this in the future? How can he calm his mind during the swim.

Audio Question from Terri: She has bowel/bathroom issues during her morning training runs. She eats breakfast, goes to bathroom, walks dogs, goes to the bathroom again, and then again a few more times during the run. She does not have this problem during afternoon and evening runs.

~ In my response to Terri, I mention CapraCleanse and the Squatty Potty.

Audio Question from Abe (sorry... I mean Dave): He has an "Endurance Weekend" race coming up: 5k run on Friday, sprint triathlon Saturday morning, followed by 15 mile time trial. Then after a 3 to 4 hour break, there is a 25 mile road race. On Sunday morning there is a "crit". What would you do training, fueling and recovery for the week of the race?

~ Here is my magnesium oil.

Audio Question from John: John is considering running the ING New York City Marathon. He has run 2 half marathons, goes to gym 4 times a week, and is in good shape (but could lose 5lbs around stomach). Has a slight case of hypermobility syndrome in his knee. After previous half marathons could barely walk for a few days (due to foot pain). He really wants to do a full marathon but doesn't want to break himself.

~ In my response to John, I mention www.marathondominator.com, since it sounds like he's not really doing much weight training.

Greg and Sharon ask: We noticed in one of your videos at home you have a water filtering system. I don't remember the name of it but we looked at it about two years ago and wondered about it (I even contacted the company with my question). When the water is filtered through all of the layers it stays in your container with the filter, right? In other words, you just spent the whole night filtering water, but the filter stays up in the middle of the water after it's filtered. Where did the impurities from the water go?

Scott asks: My daughter is a competitive high school swimmer and also has scoliosis (27% curvature). This has been a great activity for her for the past 12 years and I feel has helped keep her body strong. However, this spring season she has developed a sharp pain on exhaling forcefully or on impact (like diving or pushing off the wall). She has never scratched a race, but now is unable to complete a 100 breaststroke. The pain is localized on her left side (the 'low' side of her spinal curvature) below her scapula in her rhomboid. She's been icing, stretching, using ibuprofen, and electo-stim. Do you have any suggestions on how to rehab the injury and any special considerations for rehab and training given her scoliosis?

~ In my response, I mention the book "Stopping Scoliosis".

Jenell asks: Now, I know this may come off as a weird question, but what is your take on Veggie Straws by Sensible Portions. They seem to be healthy and are all natural with no preservatives but I have my "guard up" so to speak on them because at times what seems healthy for you really isn't. If you could provide your feed back on this it would be greatly appreciated.

~ In my response, I mention my top 5 quick summer fat loss recipes, including kale chips.

Julia asks: I am recovering from a fracture to my tibial plateau and a recently bruised sternum (got a little stupid using a poorly adjusted upright rower @ the gym). Obviously, chest and weight bearing exercise is contraindicated. Do you have any creative exercises to share, particularly ones that can strengthen my lower body in some way.

~ In my response, I mention this article.

Carla asks: I'm very lean, normal BMI/BF% , mother of 3. I exercise 5 x a week (cardio/weights/plyometrics/hiit etc), but after 3 C-sections my abs are not responding and I can't get rid of the excess skin in the lower part of my abs. I am considering a tummy tuck. Is there any other way?

~ In my response to Carla, I mention 14 core exercises for when you're pregnant. I also mention skin firming creams from Green Cupboards.

Gregory says:I weigh 250 lbs and I'm 31 I want to get bigger arms but I want to loose weight, how do I go about doing this without using small weights? I was told that I should just do a bunch of cardio to drop the weight then start lifting. Others have suggested that I do a circuit with a high heart rate, like do some heavy weights then light weights at high rep then some quick cardio. So, how am I supposed to get/maintain some big muscles and trim down to like 225/230?

Biohack Your Breath With Nose "Boners", Carbon Dioxide Inhalation, Tibetan Longevity Stretches & Much More: How To Unlock The New Science Of A Lost Art.

bengreenfieldfitness.com/lostart           I first interviewed today's guest, immersive journalist James Nestor, about "freediving" in the episode: The Extreme Sport You’ve Probably Never Heard Of, And How You Can Use Its Renegade Techniques To Become Superhuman. It was such an exciting and intriguing show that afterwards, I wound up traveling all the way to Ft. Lauderdale to take a freediving course, which absolutely changed my life (you can learn more about that in my episode with Ted Harty: The Ultimate Guide To Freediving, Legal Blood Doping, Wim Hof Breathing, Increasing Your Breathhold Time, Underwater Ear Equalizing, Spearfishing & Much More!).           Today James is back to talk about something we all do 25,000 times a day, yet most of us do it incorrectly or haven't even begun to tap into its lost art. That's right. I'm talking about your breath.           In his new book "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art", James travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe.           Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is.           Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, James turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again after hearing this podcast.         During our discussion, you'll discover:           -The breath work protocol James uses to begin his day...7:41         -Why James views breath as the "missing pillar" of health...9:55         -What James views as the "dis-evolution" of breathing...14:15         -The truly awful effects of mouth breathing...18:38         -The unusual connection between the clitoris and the nose...24:11         -How the left and right nostril activate the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems...27:44         -Healthy breathing practices of Native American and indigenous S. American populations...30:50         -Changes James made in his lifestyle after writing his book...37:06           -What other cultures and religions can teach us regarding the ideal pace of breathing...47:08           -Tibetan "rites" that help expand the lungs and diaphragm...56:47         -The Tummo method of breathing...1:06:30           -How to biohack your breath work...1:09:55           Episode sponsors: Kion Flex, Butcher Box, Thrive Market, Comrade Socks bengreenfieldfitness.com/lostartSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everything You Need To Know About How To Use Hydrogen Water: Timing, Dosing, Delivery Mechanisms, Hydrogen Tablets, Hydrogen Water Machines, Hydrogen Inhalers & Much More!

Everything You Need To Know About How To Use Hydrogen Water: Timing, Dosing, Delivery Mechanisms, Hydrogen Tablets, Hydrogen Water Machines, Hydrogen Inhalers & Much More!

My guest on today's show, Robert Slovak, devoted himself to the science of water after life-altering experiences. He took his astronautical and mechanical engineering degrees and decided to pursue the research of reverse osmosis with his brother Jack. The dynamic duo were considered the early developers of Reverse Osmosis technology.           After retiring from the corporate world, Robert left for Brazil to bring advanced water technology. While working in the rainforest he became sick with gastrointestinal illness due to unsanitary eating conditions in the small village. It was then he was taken to a biologist who had given him something called "Quinton Marine Plasma" to quickly eliminate the affliction. Robert left the Brazilian biologist the following morning convinced he had uncovered one of the greatest medicines of history, an imported marine solution from Spain.           But Robert went on to do plenty more, as we discuss in our previous episode "Water & Water Filtration: Everything You Need To Know About Water Filters, Alkaline Water, Structured Water, Hydrogen-Rich Water, Deuterium-Depleted Water & Much More!". In that episode, we discussed: -Which water filter is best?-Should you add minerals to my water?-What Robert thinks about alkaline water.-What is structured water?-Hydrogen-rich water? -Deuterium-depleted water (DDW)?-And much more... In today's show, Robert and I decided to take a much deeper dive into hydrogen water, which I also discussed in very good detail with Tyler Lebaron of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute in the episode "The 30 Year Old Scientist Phenom Who Runs a 2:30 Marathon, Deadlifts 420 Pounds & Drinks Hydrogen Enriched Water."         During our discussion you'll discover:         -Robert's history with hydrogen (H2) and water...11:15         -How H2 is unique among other compounds...25:18         -How H2 affects inflammatory pathways in the body...34:42         -Hydrogen administration methods...45:18         -How Robert used H2 to heal serious injury in miraculous time...55:37         -How H2 tablets work, and what to look for in them...1:02:45         -Proper timing and dosage of H2...1:12:04         And much more!         Episode sponsors: Kion, Joovv, Organifi, Powerdot       waterandwellness.com  bengreenfieldfitness.com/allthingshydrogenSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beyond Fasting: How To Biohack Your Fast To Accelerate Fat Loss, Stave Off Carbohydrate Cravings & Enhance Cellular Autophagy.

Beyond Fasting: How To Biohack Your Fast To Accelerate Fat Loss, Stave Off Carbohydrate Cravings & Enhance Cellular Autophagy.

Fatigue, low energy, brain fog, weight loss resistance, low libido, anxiety, sleep problems, depression, and others have become so common today that most people speak of them as just normal with age. Even thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, and other hormone-related conditions are so common they are being considered a normal part of aging. They may be common, but I can assure you they are not normal and there is, in fact, one quite potent answer... ...fasting.           Dr. Pompa is a respected leader in the health and wellness space, educating  practitioners and the public on the origins of inflammation-driven disease, the therapeutic application of the ketogenic diet, fasting, ancestral-based health approaches, cellular healing, and detoxification. Although trained as a chiropractor, his authority is rooted in his own battle, having overcome neurotoxic illness and heavy metal poisoning using his own unique cellular detoxification strategies.           His journey back to health continued to lead him to a voracious passion to research and learning beyond what is often readily understood. A relentless self-experimenter, Dr. Pompa has a passion for healing others. He’s a true warrior of a ‘from pain to purpose’ mindset, and he speaks about removing the cause of toxicity and inflammation, going upstream, and following a multi-therapeutic approach to health and healing.             Dan's new book "Beyond Fasting" (use code BEN15 for 15% off the book) will take you "beyond fasting" with its expected results for healing the body naturally by leading you into the proper preparation for a successful fast. This will ultimately result in maximum healing, as well as making the fast as easy as possible.             His seven-week protocol prepares you for the fast by getting your cells to use their own stored fat as energy (fat-adaptation). By going into the fast fat-adapted you will go "Beyond Fasting" because results start day one of the fast, and will lead you into a lifestyle that will ultimately change your life forever, as it has for thousands around the world. This book, and the podcast you're about to hear, will help to equip the body with the tools to heal and create new stem cells from day one of the fast, which generally doesn't happen until day four or five.           During our discussion, you'll discover: -The latest technology that's caught Dr. Pompa's eye...10:33         -How Dan's fasting protocol differs from the trendy protocols currently in the marketplace...14:47           -How to properly prepare for a fast...26:20           -What to do after a fast...38:08         -Dan's personal approach to fasting...44:15           -Biohacks Ben and Dan use to enhance their fasting protocol...53:21           -The impact of fasting on immunity...59:12           -How to approach fasting with children...1:08:31           Episode sponsors: Kion, Organifi, Butcher Box, Water and WellnessSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Future Of Corporate Wellness: What A Cutting-Edge, Gold-Standard Executive & Employee Health Program Should Look Like.

The Future Of Corporate Wellness: What A Cutting-Edge, Gold-Standard Executive & Employee Health Program Should Look Like.

bengreenfieldfitness.com/livetimeless Let's face it.     Corporate wellness programs are old-school and outdated, including...     ...cafeteria and nutrition programs that simply advise you to "eat more lean protein" or "consume more fruits and vegetables"...     ...yearly basic doctor checkups with almost zero motivation, accountability, feedback or utilization of advanced lab and biometric testing...     ...lack of advanced biohacks in the workplace, or attention paid to hidden environmental assailants that affect energy and the company's bottom line, such as air, light, water and electricity...     ...it's time that changed, and my guests on today's podcast are doing just that, through their new, advanced corporate wellness program called "Live Timeless".     Alexander von Gramatzki grew up playing soccer in Europe where he had a chance to play alongside legends like Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Tony Kroos. During his youth soccer career he was connected to advanced wellness technologies to get him intimately attuned with his optimal state of performance. Even though Alex ended his youth soccer career to pursue education and business, his ability to find a high performing state resulted in him being able to work in a state of flow. As a result of being able to function at high levels, Alex was fortunate to find opportunities that allowed him to earn millions of dollars starting at the age of 23. Due to his achievements he was then the youngest person to be accepted into and graduate from the Wharton Schools 2-year long Executive General Management Program. His focus is now on bringing wellness technologies and health tests into the workplace so that companies can get their employees more attuned with their body and mind.         During our discussion, you'll discover: -Alex's history with health and biohacking...8:00       -How to package individual protocols and biohacks into a comprehensive corporate wellness program...13:54       -How to share collective results while maintaining individual's privacy...30:16       -Boots on the ground; how this system is implemented...45:12       -The future of corporate wellness...53:11       Episode sponsors: Kion, JOOVV, Butcher Box, Seed Daily SynbioticSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Which Genes Impact Your Longevity The Most? How To Decode Your Genes & Unlock Key Insights To Living Longer & Aging Well (+Bonus Coronavirus Genetic Analysis Information!).

My guest on today's show, Joe Cohen of SelfHacked, first appeared on the episode "How To Decode Your Genome, Unlock The Nitty-Gritty Details Behind Your DNA, Discover Your Good Genes, Your Bad Genes & More.", then later on "32 Ways to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve, Fine-Tune Your Nervous System & Self-Hack Your Hormones."  Joe Cohen won the genetic lottery of bad genes. As a kid, he suffered from inflammation, brain fog, fatigue, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, and other issues that were poorly understood in both conventional and alternative medicine. Frustrated by the lack of good information and tools, Joe decided to embark on a journey of self-experimentation and self-learning to improve his health--something that has since become known as “biohacking”. With thousands of experiments and Pubmed articles under his belt, Joe founded SelfHacked, the resource that was missing when he needed it. SelfHacked now gets millions of monthly readers. Joe is a thriving entrepreneur, author and speaker. He is the CEO of SelfHacked, SelfDecode and LabTestAnalyzer. His mission is to help people gain access to the most up-to-date, unbiased, and science-based ways to optimize their health. Joe has been studying health sciences for 17 years and has read over 30,000 PubMed articles. He's given consultations to over 1000 people who have sought his health advice. After completing the pre-med requirements at university, he founded SelfHacked because he wanted to make a big impact in improving global health. He's written hundreds of science posts, multiple books on improving health, and speaks at various health conferences. He's keen on building a brain-trust of top scientists who will improve the level of accuracy of health content on the web. He's also founded SelfDecode and LabTestAnalyzer, popular genetic and lab software tools to improve health. At SelfDecode, Joe has recently launched a longevity tool that allows you to live longer by knowing how to take actionable steps based on your genes. You can order tests here. It's All In Your Mouth: How Your Teeth Are Impacting Your Immune System, Sleep, Performance, Inflammation & Much More (& What You Can Do About It With Holistic Dentistry).

bengreenfieldfitness.com/allinyourmouth           I don't go to a regular dentist.         Matter of fact, for reasons you'll discover in this podcast episode, I wouldn't personally step foot near a "regular" dentist's office.         Instead, because I understand how profound an impact my teeth, gums, tongue and oral cavity have on my entire biological system, I only work with a holistic, biological dentist.         Due to my strong interest in this matter of dental health and holistic dentistry, I recently read a fantastic new book entitled "It's All in Your Mouth: Biological Dentistry and the Surprising Impact of Oral Health on Whole Body Wellness" written by my guest on today's show, Dr. Dominik Nischwitz.       Challenging conventional dental wisdom that views the teeth as separate from the rest of the body, and conventional dental practices that often cause more harm than good, my podcast guest today, Dr. Nischwitz himself, lays out:           -The latest research on the microbiome and the mouth -Critical information on the dangers of root canals and amalgam fillings -The important role of nutrition in oral health and hygiene -A clarion call for a new approach to dentistry -And much more.           During our discussion, you'll discover:           -Dominik and Ben share their personal oral care regimen...6:53           -An overview of holistic or biological dentistry...23:46           -The link between the nervous system and the teeth...38:50           -Whether or not wisdom teeth really need to be removed...50:56           -How chewing assists with the production of TH-17 immune factor cells...58:42           -What are pellicles, and how saliva helps take care of them...1:07:48           -How to find a holistic dentist near you...1:20:46           bengreenfieldfitness.com/allinyourmouthSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
