Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Brock Skywalker Armstrong, the Podcast Sidekick and Audio Ninja.

Fitness Fabrics & Fashion: Exercise Clothing 101

Alicia says: How should she choose what kind of training gear to wear? She usually wears smartwool in the winter (or the free race shirts) and just a sport bra top in the summer. Is there anything to all the new space-age fabric that is out there for run clothing. Can you let us know about those fabrics? Does she need to be concerned about whether or not fabrics are organic, etc? Especially since they are going to be pressed up against her sweaty body.

In my response, I recommend: -The article "5 Tips To Choose The Right Exercise Clothing". -Castelli for cycling/triathlon gear -Hylete (use code BEN50 to save 50%) -Kryptek (use code BEN to save 15%) -Jackthreads Daily drops of new curated collections from the brands you love, a seemingly never-ending feed of limited-run collaborations from mega brands and up-and-coming designers alike, and a growing stable of private label product Jackthreads is building from the ground up that you can't find anywhere else. Can Radiation Be Good For You (And Natural Remedies For Radiation)?

Todd says: He just discovered that his home has high levels of radon gas. He has gone through the mitigation process of insulating and venting but is wondering if there is something else he can do to lessen the long term damage it may have done to his family (including his 22 month old twins). Perhaps something he can add to his diet?

In my response, I recommend: -The concept of radiation hormesis -Nascent iodine -Calcium, magnesium, clay and the other compounds found at Magnetic Clay -Activated charcoal -Organic Germanium -Organic Brewer's Yeast -Bee Pollen -DMSO How To Do Isokinetic Training

Joe says: He wants to know more about isokinetic training for strength and power. He has noticed that the Exer-Genie is still on the market and would like to know what you think of that.

In my response, I recommend: -Vasa Swim Ergometer -ARXFit What To Do About Sweaty Hands

George says: He would like to know of ways to keep his hands warm and dry. Lately he has been getting clammy hands even when he doesn't feel nervous or anxious. He would like to tone it down on the fist bumps and get back to the man gripping. Any idea what might cause this and what he can do about it?

In my response, I recommend: -Our previous episode on hyperhidrosis -Autoimmune diet

APP ONLY VIDEO: Dave Asprey: “Mycotoxins & Superhuman Performance”

Have a race, event, Ironman triathlon or anything else coming up? I’d reconsider blue cheese and other “moldy” foods in your build-up – here’s a few: sour cream, buttermilk and sour milk; cured, pickled and smoked meats and fish; prepackaged meats, like lunch meats, salami, smoked fish and some sardines; pickles, olives, capers, salad dressing or ketchup; vinegar and soy sauce. I’m not saying always completely ‘em – but nuke ‘em in final few important weeks of performance – and that would include moldy hotel room coffee too. Dave Asprey is the founder of The Bulletproof Executive. He is a Silicon Valley investor, computer security expert, and entrepreneur who spent 15 years and $250,000 to hack his own biology. He upgraded his brain by >20 IQ points, lowered his biological age, and lost 100 lbs without using calories or exercise. The Financial Times calls him a “bio-hacker who takes self- quantification to the extreme of self-experimentation.” His writing has been published by the New York Times and Fortune, and he’s presented at Wharton, Kellogg, the University of California, and Singularity University. Her boss smokes them around her all the time in enclosed areas. James says @ 00:36:04 Recently came down with pneumonia which has killed his race season and has been warned to take it easy and give himself time to heal. David asks @ 01:04:34 He recently switched from Olive Oil to Coconut Oil for most of his cooking and is wondering how much he should be consuming. He is mixing about a tablespoon into his morning cappuccino - is that too much? He is also wondering about the smoke point. He has read that Olive and Coconut Oil have about the same smoke point. Is that true? ~ In my response, I reference this smoke point chart, Nutive extra virgin coconut oil,  and also bulletproof coffee. Jim asks @ 01:16:56 Ben talks about using supplements to maintain low blood sugar and promote liver health but are there any supplements that support the pancreas and help maintain healthy beta cells. ~ In my response to Jim, I recommend MPX100 and Thermofactor. Craig asks @ 00:32:38 After listening to the interview with Dr Cobb, he was wondering if Lasik (laser) Eye surgery might positively effect performance. ~ In my response to Craig, I mention the Z-Health interview and the Bates Method. Ian asks @ 00:42:27 His father has Restless Legs. Every night when he goes to bed his legs and shoulders twitch. He doesn't take any supplements but he does have lowish thyroid. Would like to know what he should be eating or taking. Could this be an inflammatory issue? ~ In my response, I recommend: Magnesium lotion, Floradix, Full spectrum antioxidant with Vitamin C and E, such as LifeShotz, Bitter melon extract, Valerian Root, Folic acid, Near Infrared, and Fish oil.     Sidestitch says @ 00:53:10 She gets a left sided stitch when she drinks more than 4oz of water on a long run (she also gets an annoying sloshing feeling) and also at the end of shorter more intense sessions, if she has eaten less than 2 hours before. What's up with that and how can she stop it? Also, is there an easy way to find topics that have been covered on past podcasts? ~ This response can be found as part of the Ben Greenfield Fitness Top Hits, Vol. 1. Jim says @ 01:13:17 He is 46 years old and has been performing fasted workouts for the last 25 years. Lately he has been keeping an eye on his glucose levels due to a fasted glucose test of 129 and an A1C of 4.8. He noticed that during his hard fasted workouts his blood glucose increases up to 35 points. He has increased his cinnamon intake, is only eating carbs after workouts and is supporting his liver with bitter melon. He is curious if there is a way of quantifying that 35 point rise in terms of calories released by the liver. ~ In my response to Jim, I mention bitter melon extract. Katie asks @ 01:19:50 She knows there are a lot of artificial sweeteners in low carb products and would like to know the pros and cons of them.
