Synanon Part 2: Syno-do

What happens when a treatment program learns how to break people down and then decides that breaking them is the entire point?

In this episode of Torture: A Dark History, Kevin Young and Dan Hourigan return to Synanon and Chuck Dederich to explore the next and far darker evolution of The Game: The Trip. What was presented as an “insight-producing” experience was an intense weekend of sleep deprivation, humiliation, psychological attacks, forced confessions, emotional breakdowns, and manipulation designed to strip away a person's defenses and replace them with complete loyalty to Synanon.

We look at how The Trip pushed members to their physical and emotional limits, how Chuck attempted to recreate the altered state of consciousness he experienced on LSD without using drugs, and how the same techniques of isolation, exhaustion, fear, and group pressure increasingly became tools of control. As Synanon grew richer and more powerful, its treatment of children became increasingly disturbing, its rules became more extreme, and violence that had once been forbidden inside the organization became increasingly accepted.

But this is where Synanon's story takes an even darker turn. Children were separated from their parents, subjected to harsh discipline and forced labor, and in some cases: brutalized. Chuck declared war on anyone he considered an enemy, Synanon created the Imperial Marines (and their hilarious brand of martial arts) weapons began appearing in the organization, and threats against journalists, former members, lawyers, and local residents escalated into actual violence. And eventually, one of those threats involved a rattlesnake in a mailbox.

From The Trip and psychological torture to child abuse, forced sterilization, cult control, beatings, the Imperial Marines, and the attempted murder of attorney Paul Morantz, this is the story of how Synanon went from a celebrated experiment in addiction treatment to an organization operating through fear and violence.

And because this is Torture: A Dark History, we're going to dig into the disturbing ways psychological torture can work without a rack, a cage, or a medieval torture device, and, of course, we'll have our usual dark and twisted humor along the way.
