The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Mirror in the Sky: The Life and Music of Stevie Nicks by Simon Morrison

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Mirror in the Sky: The Life and Music of Stevie Nicks by Simon Morrison

Mirror in the Sky: The Life and Music of Stevie Nicks by Simon Morrison A stunning musical biography of Stevie Nicks that paints a portrait of an artist, not a caricature of a superstar. Reflective and expansive, Mirror in the Sky situates Stevie Nicks as one of the finest songwriters of the twentieth century. This biography from distinguished music historian Simon Morrison examines Nicks as a singer and songwriter before and beyond her career with Fleetwood Mac, from the Arizona landscape of her childhood to the strobe-lit Night of 1000 Stevies celebrations. The book uniquely: Analyzes Nicks’s craft—the grain of her voice, the poetry of her lyrics, the melodic and harmonic syntax of her songs. Identifies the American folk and country influences on her musical imagination that place her within a distinctly American tradition of women songwriters. Draws from oral histories and surprising archival discoveries to connect Nicks’s story to those of California’s above- and underground music industries, innovations in recording technology, and gendered restrictions.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Riders Come Out at Night: Brutality, Corruption, and Cover-up in Oakland by Ali Winston, Darwin BondGraham

The Riders Come Out at Night: Brutality, Corruption, and Cover-up in Oakland by Ali Winston, Darwin BondGraham NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE From the Polk Award–winning investigative duo comes a critical look at the systematic corruption and brutality within the Oakland Police Department, and the more than two-decades-long saga of attempted reforms and explosive scandals. No municipality has been under court oversight to reform its police department as long as the city of Oakland. It is, quite simply, the edge case in American law enforcement. The Riders Come Out at Night is the culmination of over twenty-one years of fearless reporting. Ali Winston and Darwin BondGraham shine a light on the jackbooted police culture, lack of political will, and misguided leadership that have conspired to stymie meaningful reform. The authors trace the history of Oakland since its inception through the lens of the city’s police department, through the Palmer Raids, McCarthyism, and the Civil Rights struggle, the Black Panthers and crack eras, to Oakland’s present-day revival. Readers will be introduced to a group of sadistic cops known as “The Riders,” whose disregard for the oath they took to protect and serve is on full, tragic, infuriating display. They will also meet Keith Batt, a wide-eyed rookie cop turned whistleblower, who was unwittingly partnered with the leader of the Riders. Other compelling characters include Jim Chanin and John Burris, two civil rights attorneys determined to see reform through, in spite of all obstacles. And Oakland’s deep history of law enforcement corruption, reactionary politics, and social movement organizing is retold through historical figures like Black Panther Huey Newton, drug kingpin Felix Mitchell, district attorney and future Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, and Mayor Jerry Brown. The Riders Come Out at Night is the story of one city and its police department, but it’s also the story of American policing—and where it’s headed.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Sex Trafficker’s Wife: A Story of Truth, Faith, and Trust in Self by A. Quick

The Sex Trafficker’s Wife: A Story of Truth, Faith, and Trust in Self by A. Quick She was a loving housewife. He was a hard-working husband. Together they shared three precious boys. Their marriage wasn’t perfect, but there was love between them, and it worked…right until that fateful day when it all fell apart. This is the true story of Amanda who, through no fault of her own, found herself caught up by the darkest most insidious corners of the criminal world of sex trafficking minors. Her husband, the man she loved and the father of her children, was a criminal. And when it all came down, she was left holding the pieces. This book is written for the women left in the shadows and the aftermath. For the spouses and partners who lose everything in an instant, but still have to keep going, navigating through complex legal systems, coming to terms with the betrayal, and somehow “holding it all together for the kids.” The ones nobody talks about, except in hushed whispers. With a remarkably candid tone, and a clear explanation of events and facts, Quick pulls back the curtain on what happens to those left behind once the perpetrator is caught. Much more than a memoir, this book is also a beacon of light and hope for others in the same situation. As Amanda states, “My message to the world is really quite simple. The only person who can change your life is you. Every single person has the power to choose differently.” Are you ready? It is time to shake off the shackles of the past that were put on you by another. It is time to step into your own power. It is time to trust yourself. It is time to begin to heal.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Courage Under Fire: Under Siege and Outnumbered 58 to 1 on January 6 by Steven A. Sund

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Courage Under Fire: Under Siege and Outnumbered 58 to 1 on January 6 by Steven A. Sund

Courage Under Fire: Under Siege and Outnumbered 58 to 1 on January 6 by Steven A. Sund One of the darkest days in American history became an extraordinary story of courage under fire. Courage Under Fire is United States Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund’s gripping personal account that takes readers inside the events leading up to January 6, and provides a detailed and harrowing minute-by-minute account of the attack on the US Capitol, which was valiantly defended in hand-to-hand combat by the US Capitol Police officers who found themselves outnumbered 58 to 1. Courage Under Fire draws upon audio recordings, key documents, and government records as it traces Sund’s extraordinary journey from his command post on January 6 to his explosive behind-closed-doors testimony before the January 6 committee. Steven A. Sund, one of only ten men in history to hold the title of Chief of the US Capitol Police, has coordinated dozens of National Special Security Events, responded to numerous critical incidents and active shooter events, and has protected every living US president. But nothing could have prepared him for the violent attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Three days before the attack, Chief Sund requested the assistance of the National Guard. This request was denied. In preparation for the Joint Session of Congress, Chief Sund directed every available sworn officer to be on duty to protect the Capitol and all of its members and staff. But it wasn’t enough. The savage attack that followed was a well-planned and carefully coordinated armed assault on the United States Capitol, involving thousands. The shock and horror of this attack exploded on TV screens worldwide as US Capitol Police officers under Chief Sund’s command found themselves facing a violent siege, hit with pipes, fire extinguishers, boards, and flag poles. Dedicated men and women were knocked unconscious and sprayed with mace and bear spray as live pipe bombs were discovered at the national headquarters of both major political parties. Finally multiple police lines were breached. Then the building was breached. The National Guard didn’t arrive until it was much too late. In the end, 150 officers were seriously injured, and nine Americans were dead.
